First approach to vast Patagonia

Calafate travelogue picture
I visited Patagonia during my 3,5 weeks' trip to Argentina in November/December 2002. I had been in Buenos Aires back in 1996, and promised myself that I would be back to see some more of this incredible country, when possible. Argentina was extremely expensive in the 90`s, but due to the economic crisis, it has become a very popular travel destination recently. I wanted to see some different places in Argentina, and the choice was not easy to make. I definitely wanted to include Patagonia, so finally my dream could come true. Calafate is a small town in South Patagonia, the capital of Santa Cruz Province. It is a starting point to visit the glaciers and do the trekking in the Chalten area (with possible extenssion to Torres del Paine Park in Chile). Calafate has its own small airport, and daily flights are available from Buenos Aires and other cities in Argentina.

Favourite spots:

Calafate town with its lovely small houses, the glaciers, the bird-watch lagoona, mountains around Chalten.

What's really great:

The vastness and emptiness of Patagonia, watching the glaciers, a cruise on the Argentina Lake to see the ice-bergs and glaciers, the views of Chalten and Cerro Torre peaks

Accommodations:

There are a lot of hostels in Calafate, its advisable to book the room in advance.

Restaurants:

Food is not quite cheap in Calafate, simply as they have to bring everything from far-away places. Almost all the restaurants are situated on the main street, there you can find some supermarkets as well.
