The city of Clayton, Georgia is located in the mountains that border Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This location is perfect as a central point of your activities in the three-state area. I enjoyed staying here when visiting for gem mining in North Carolina, as well as for whitewater rafting in South Carolina.
Favourite spots:
Several of my favorite spots in the area were: Gold City Mining - Franklin, N.C. Chattooga River - whitewater rafting on the border of the two states (Georgia and South Carolina) Dillard House - a historic restaurant about 10 miles north
What's really great:
I enjoyed the mountain scenery at any time of the year. Plus, the whitewater rafting on the Chattooga is the most challenging of any in the Southern United States.
Sights:
The water on the Chattooga River is great. This is the river on which the movie, Deliverance was filmed. The rapids range between Class II and Class VI, depending on which section of the river you travel. A great experience can be had by rafting both Section III and Section IV on successive days. A package can be arranged to raft for two days, eat four meals, and have lodging for one night for about $225 USD per person.
Accommodations:
Kingwood Resort and Spa - a bit pricey ($100 -$150 USD per night)
Historic Old Clayton Inn - this is not as nice as Kingwood, nor as pricey, but it still was not a bargain
Hangouts:
Buck Creek Tavern
Restaurants:
Buck Creek Tavern
