Service-Learning in the Sacred Valley of Peru

  14 votes
In the summer of 2004 (technically winter in South America), I travelled to Peru with a group from the University of Pittsburgh, participating in a service-learning project.

Our group spent the spring semester studying leadership in service-learning and global citizenship. We were to put our skills and knowledge to use while working side by side with the people of Llipllec, a small mountain community about 1.5 hours southeast of Cusco. The community was in need of a primary school for their children, and with the liasons of the civic group ProPeru, our group was able to aid in building the school. While in Peru we also travelled to some notable sights in the Sacred Valley.

Favourite spots:
The walk-up coffee window in Plaza de Armas, Cusco. Mama Afrika and Mama Amerika, Plaza de Armas, Cusco. Hotel Pisac, Pisac. Plaza de Armas, Calca. Restaurant Jacinta, Calca. The Pampas in Llipllec.

What's really great:
The wise, friendly, hospitable, welcoming, warm people of Llipllec, the open markets of Urubamba, Inti Raymi in Cusco, music of the Andes.

Sights:
There is SO MUCH!

Accommodations:
Hotel Espana- hostel. Cusco. Friendly staff, speak Spanish though.

Nightlife:
Mama Afrika, Plaza de Armas, Cusco- great club, lively, lots of people from alllll over the world. That would explain all the different flags on the ceiling.
Mama Amerika, Plaza de Armas, Cusco- they have great salsa merengue here at your request. Get a local to teach you.

Hangouts:
Cross Keys Irish Pub, Plaza de Armas, Cusco- take the stairs ALLL the way to the top to find the small barred window with an incredible view over the plaza. A great place to watch Inti Raymi without the crowds. Nice people.
The Sofa Lounge, Cusco- interesting place, very comfy. Great mojitos, great music. Nice place to just lounge.

Restaurants:
Jacinta Restaurant, Calca- great place to stop when travelling through the Sacred Valley. They have an interesting assortment of things, also ducks that wander around outside are friendly.
Babiete, Cusco- great pizza for great price. Quaint little place. Always dependable.
