Fort Lauderdale is basically a downtown full of banks, a beach full of people and guesthouses, and some ugly suburbs full of trailer parks. And everywhere is full of tourists in shorts, hawaii shirts and caps. But its sort of nice though, for a shorter period.
Favourite spots:
The beach, naturally. And anywhere in downtown but Las Olas boulevard, which is designed for wealthy tourists.
What's really great:
The beach is excellent, although somewhat crowded for my tastes (swimming after dark gives you a whole beach stretch to yourself though), Las Olas Boulevard, also called Millionaires Row is amusing in its tacky display of extreme wealth.
Sights:
If you´ve got a car, Everglades and other typical Florida attractions are accessible. If you don´t, you either stay in town or go on tours with extortionate prices for anyone on a budget.
Accommodations:
Some roadside motels along the highway entering town, spent a night at Day´s Inn at $56 a double, dirty and weird and disgusting breakfast. Not really central either. Once you get to the beach area (bus 11 from the bus terminal, every half hour, never on time, $1 or $1,50 for daypass) the place is full of motels, hotels and anything you may want. Seemed most of the seaview places with pools charged in the $50-75 range. Spent a few days at Waterfront Inn, which was quite nice, but don´t reckon much different from the other motels.
Restaurants:
Any hotel has one, a few are lined along the beach, and many at the Las Olas Riverfront, which is a combination of nice river view and shopping center located downtown.
Other recommendations:
The public library gives you an hour of free internetting, lines weren´t very long.
