Erupting Fortuna

Fortuna travelogue picture
Fortuna was definitely the highlight of my visit to Costa Rica and if you have never seen an erupting volcano before and you should not miss this when in Costa Rica. Fortuna is a nice little tourist town on the dormant side of the Volcan Arenal, most of the attractions are a long hike or short ride from town.

Favourite spots:
My favorite spot is at a hot springs spa, Tabacon Resort, at the base of the Volcan Arenal mountain at night. I had a small dinner and a few beers here while watching glowing red lava flow down the mountain. During the day, all I could see was smoke.

What's really great:
I hiked out to Catarata Fortuna, a 75 meter waterfall, and swam in the pool under the fall in a pretty forested area.

Across the road from the Tabacon Resort is an inexpensive hot springs spa which is very nice. It is a great place to spend a day, have a picnic, and just soak away the travails of budget travel. There is also a zip cord canopy ride here if you want some excitement of flying through the rainforest on a seat hooked to a metal cable.

Accommodations:
Stayed in the Cabinas Las Palmas, which was a very basic place, but had roosters that woke us very early in morning. Then moved to Pension Orosi which was new and clean with cable tv for under $20US for double occupancy.

Other recommendations:
There are also horseback rides here and a snake park. A snake park run by a Chinese immigrant who walked around with a live Boa Constrictor named Juanita wrapped around his neck. He said he loved Juanita more than his wife, but please do not tell his wife this.

Just got back from La Fortuna (Dec 04) and know how lucky you are to see the volcano without clouds. I wish I would have gone to the waterfall and snake park now.

I agree, volcanoes are wonderful especially eruptions. We were in Costa Rica last year but went to the coast as we had seen many volcanoes, erupting and non-erupting in Indonesia. A country I can recommend to you.
