I've been to Madrid several times for my job. Unfortunately my trips didn't let me enough time to visit it. My knowledge of Madrid is mostly limitated to the sights I got from the taxis on my ways between the airport and downtown.
Gran Via
As said above, I've not a large experience of Madrid. The sights I got of it showed an open, spaced out and clean city, which gave me the urge to come back for a longer stay to visit it. I've had the opportunity to see the Plaza de Toros, to go to the area located east of the Paseo della Castellana, and to walk along the Gran Via. Once, I found some time for a short walk to the Puerta del Sol and its surroundings (Gran Via, Plaza Reale). Great ! I also tried the underground, which looks a very convenient and cheap means of transport to visitors.
Favourite spots:
Plaza Mayor
The Puerta del Sol square. A nice place where car traffic should be limited. The Plaza Mayor square (pic on the left), a very calm place contrary to the one above.
What's really great:
The light. The climate in spring and autumn. The cheap restaurants.
Accommodations:
Hotel Liabeny - Calle de la Salud, 3 Hotel Emperatriz - Lopez de Hoyos, 4 Both are **** category, so rather expansive, except for business travellers !
Other recommendations:
Madrid's underground
The underground, which has a dense network, and allows direct connection to Barajas Airport.
Gerard,
