Portland is a huge metropolitan area situated in the northern part Oregon along the Columbia river. It has its share of problems just like other big cities, but the thing that bothers me the most is the traffic. Within the last 10 years, the outer areas have become very crowded with new housing developements, but these houses were put up before the roads going to these houses were widened and this causes very bad traffic. Also, if you are not a rain person, find somewhere else to live.
Favourite spots:
I really enjoy getting out of the city to explore the wilderness around the city. One is still able to be in downtown Portland and drive for 30 minutes (when traffic is not bad) and be in the wild. I enjoyed traveling up and down the Clackamas river and snowboarding on Mt. Hood (about 70 miles away depending on where you are in the city.
What's really great:
My family lives there, so I visit them as often as I can. There is so much to do outside the city like camping and fishing that you should never get bored
Sights:
There are many bridges that span the Willamette river in the downtown area.
Nightlife:
I always make time to go to the Canton Grill on 82nd ave. It is just a little hole in the wall place but it has great karaoke every night
Hangouts:
The Witicha pub in Clackamas has great roast beef sandwiches along with beer and classic rock mucic, my kind of place
Other recommendations:
There is so much outdoorsy things to do around the area that you should not be bored. Try sturgeon fishing on the Columbia river (it is very possible to catch a fish bigger than your boat) or camping along the Clackamas river.
