Saint-Flour is a very different kind of city. Originally it started atop a rocky hill which was surrounded by cliffs, which made its development in two parts. The oldest part ontop of the hill which dates from the 14th century with its dark lava brick buildings, its extremely narrow cobblestone streets and its amazing architecture. The other newer part was built around the bottom part of the hill.

Favourite spots:
Atop the hill we found the Place D`Armes, which is were we had one-a place to park the car, and two-a wider area from which we were able to take our time and appreciate these great architectural feats which include the Cathedral St-Pierre, whose large square black spires can be seen from a few miles afar and which is incredibly built on the side of the cliff. Here in the Place D`Armes we were also able to sit at a cafe and buy souvenirs at the local shops.

What's really great:
Almost everywhere on top of the hill, in the oldest part of Saint-Flour, you`ll find an exceptional view of the surrounding areas, from the lower town, a water way, fields and soft hills.

What`s not so great is that when driving on the higher part of the city, the streets are not well indicated as one ways, cars are double parked in the already very narrow streets, and therefore making it difficult to navigate safely.

Sights:
Inside the Cathedral we found many works of arts from the same era as the building itself.

Other recommendations:
There is also a few museum to visit which show the original costumes, tool and paraphernalia of the many centuries Saint-Flour has existed.
