Fredericton Junction travelogue picture
Patterson Settlement is situated about half and hour drive South of Fredericton Junction. In 1989, the Patterson Settlement Historical Society Inc was formed to preserve the local history. A Church, School, General store and many other buildings and artefacts have been keep in tip top shape. One can visit the settlement with guides, Sara and Todd, whom were quite familiar with the historical contents of each building and artefact.

Favourite spots:

The 1860 General store still have the original boxes of laundry detergents from the turn of the century. Also vials of medecine (which indicate very acrid taste and I believe it)which include castor oil. Bottles and other artifacts can be found here. It is the first building you will encounter, and it holds most of the information about the settlement. The original showcase, counter and scales are still intact within.

What's really great:

The people are very friendly around here. They are proud of their history, even the young ones. I was impressed by how clean the area is, and also the great clean washrooms. This settlement is proud that no government help has been needed to restore this historic village. The community has built and renovated everything with personal efforts, donations, fund raising, and employing students in the summer.

Sights:

The Church services were first held in the personal homes. In 1938(See picture), this Church was built. It was used by both Baptist and Methodist as the local settlers were of Scottish and Irish origin. Two organs are still in the church, and in working order. After 152 years the church retired and is now part of the Patterson Settlement. Inside you will get the chance to see the Historic Quilt which was once used as a fundraiser for the church. It is now on display bearing an erray of signatures of the event.

Other recommendations:

The School was first built in 1873, and was moved to its present location in 1989. It still has the original desks and many text books. On one of the wall is `Rules for 1915 Schoolteachers`. It states that they couldn`t marry while under contract with the school. They couldn`t smoke cigarettes nor dress in bright colours. Also they couldn`t `loiter` downtown in any ice cream stores. etc.. It is very amusing to read.
