Anyone who has grown up in America knows the story of The Sound of Music. In Austria, not everyone does -- but if you mention the Von Trapp family, they know what you are talking about...
Salzburg is a beautiful city! Surrounded by mountains and stunning vistas, I would recommend it to anyone going to Europe. It is easy to learn your away around, and the locals are very friendly. They are used to tourists - especially in the summer. If you like beer, pretzels and Wienerschnitzel...th-is is the city for you!
Favourite spots:
The Mozarteum. The main cathedral in town. The mountains.
What's really great:
The summer music festival is AMAZING. It should be one of the things you experience in your lifetime.
Sights:
IF you must, there is a Sound of Music tour. But, please, only if you reaalllly have to. There is so much more in this city to experience besides that!
Restaurants:
During market days, any of the outdoor pretzel and sausage stands are great, and usually a good price. Beer in this city flows and is less expensive than water.
