DA-OW-A-GA Lake

  18 votes
Every time we have a chance to visit Lake Tahoe for a few days and some times only for a day trip, I appreciate with my heart, the Creator of our Mother Nature. The Nature of our magnificent lakes, valleys, and towering mountains. report of the month contest
Sep 2004

Lake Tahoe-Emerald Bay
Lake Tahoe-Emerald Bay
Washoe Indians had discovered Lake Tahoe and called it: “Edge of the lake”-Da-ow-a-ga on their native dialect. Explorers interpreted the name as “Tahoe”. The lake had several names:” Mountain Lake”,” Lake Bigler”. In 1945 Lake Tahoe became the official name of this beautiful lake. In 1960, the Winter Olympic Games were held in Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe had claimed a permanent place on the map as the skiing center for the West. Today the Basin has evolved into a world-class recreation destination, and millions enjoy the beauty and serenity of Lake Tahoe; the live entertainment; the many ski slopes and the multitude of attractions that make up the area. The Lake Tahoe Basin has approximately 300 miles of streams, 1600 surface acres of lakes (excluding Lake Tahoe), and 71 miles of shoreline around Lake Tahoe. Lake Tahoe is the highest alpine lake in the U.S. and the second largest alpine lake in the world! Commonly referred to as Tahoe, or just The Lake by locals.

Favourite spots:
Fannett Island-Emerald Bay
Fannett Island-Emerald Bay
We have many favorite spots in Lake Tahoe; one of them is Emerald Bay Point, where for hours I can rest overlooking the beauty of the lake with its Fannett Island. Also I like to stroll on many of its shores, driving to State Lookout, where superb views of the lake can be seen through the free telescopes located here. We always like easy trails, because my dear wife is way not a great walker, so I always choose carefully: Prey Meadows-very easy great walk through a mixed conifer forest with filtered views of Lake Tahoe along the way. Numerous valleys in the spring with blankets made of many varieties of wildflowers. The ride to the top of Heavenly Ski Resort and view beautiful Lake Tahoe from the South Shore is spectacular, and of coarse visiting a Ponderosa Ranch;-the place where original Bonanza TV series was filmed, there we enjoy a saloon, the hayrides and great pancake breakfast.

What's really great:

Driving around the lake, usually for me it takes about from 4-5hours.The road around the lake is one of the most picture perfect roads in the world. I like to stop at every possible scenic area for a picture or just a rest along the drive. Wisiting Historic Eherman Mention; - one of the most beautiful historic summer homes on Lake Tahoe. Ones we had been taking a tour of this magnificent mantion, right on the shores of the lake. The special is its air, the mountains and emerald forest that surround the lake for the million, and million years, almost without a noticeable change. The nature and landscape is magnificent. The fall with its brilliant colors from orange and yellow to maroon and pink. The lake is peaceful in the fall with not so many tourists around.

A first-class job on a very special place -- thanks for doing it justice! I love Tahoe in the fall, too; just to lay atop a big rock in the sun near the water and not have a care in the world. Wonderful work, keep it up!

Probably the best written and illustrated report that I have read on GLOBO this month (September 2004). It was a good read and makes the reader want to visit. Full of information. I would suggest that you may care to add for international members:- (1) How to Get there. (2) Climate details - i.e When to Go, (3) Websites (for further research) and (4) Costs - but these are all extras to a well written article that I shall glady award *****. Hope my comments assist!
