Finding Elvis

Close your eyes and think about a place they named Surfers Paradise on Australia's Gold Coast - what do you see...? I saw cocktails being supped in front of never ending golden sunsets, as the waves crashed on the sqeeky clean sand :O)

The view from O'Malleys balcony

What I found was the Blackpool or the Rhyl of Australia, though that's not a bad thing! Surfers, despite being burdened by the world's most unimaginative marketing slogan (Surfers is Paradise), is Brisbane & Sydney's holiday resort, where the beach is lined with high rise hotels and boutique tourist shops. But it's only a narrow strip of land, with most hotels also boasting a view of the beautifully green 'hinterland' beyond the water inlets.

Favourite spots:
One ugly lookin fish...

The balcony of O'Malley's pub, overlooking the beach!
Sea World was awesome! As expected watching the sharks underwater was an incredible sight, but so too was watching a swimming polar bear or the world's ugliest fish...

What's really great:
The middle-aged Elvis impersonator, girating next to a surfboard in his white sequined jump suit (why do they always wear that white outfit...?). As he mumbled his way through Jailhouse Rock - or was it Blue Suede Shoes, it was difficult to tell - two old ladies walked up, listened briefly then turned away in disgust. You call that dancing? said the first, to which the other replied my old man can sing better than that. And they headed off into the sunset munching their ice creams...

Hangouts:
O'Malleys and another Irish pub who's name escapes me at the moment. Both have cold beer and live bands.

Other recommendations:
The coloured blur, is Vomatron!!!

Surfers has several Putt Putts if you fancy being energetic or if that doesn't provide enough thrills - try the Vomatron ride next door that is apparently the ride the astronauts fear. I felt queezy just stood under it...

Nice report about Surfers Paradise, did you try to surf also? In the hinterland you can do bike rides or you can go to Movie world. There are indeed lot's of things to do and when I was there I guess Elvis was hiding. -lol
