Hidden treasure of Germany

Page: 1 2 3 4

We discovered by chance the town of Vellberg. Sitting in the passenger’s seat I read the sign, “Vellberg, Historic Town”, and to our great surprise, we had located one of the hidden treasures of Germany. The town is set up with the original narrow passageways, medieval stairs, towers, tunnels and some metal frameworks. Vellberg is built high on a hill. On one side is a narrow river, and on the other, the road. Both meet at the tip of the triangular shaped town. Fascinated,we started our exploration.

Favourite spots:
The beautiful park of Stadtbraben holds modern pieces of sculpture. It is built between the almost intact city walls. From here, one has a wonderful view of the old bridge, which is the only way in and out of the city by automobile. p At the end of the park you will find the Natur-und Heimatmuseum. Then, you can either walk down the buhlerweg, which borders the water and the wall up to the stairs of the towers. Or you can immediately attact the city by heading up the stairs to the marktplatz. All have a mixture of modern art, which actually blends in perfectly with one another.

What's really great:
The main castle has been converted into a hotel and restaurant. One can eat on its terrace which is actually the tip of the triangle, high above the ground, and offers a spectacular view of the surrounding hills and villages. Some of the tunnels, stairs and passageways haven’t been cleaned therefore you may encounter many spiders. The town isn’t as well maintained as it should be, therefore do be careful in your exploration as some of the rock stairs are loose and may dislodge. The best way to visit is to park the car and start your exploration on foot from the pulverturm. You go down the stairs and start with the stadtgraben. The town is very small and compact, with a car it will be very difficult to maneuver. Vellberg is situated about a 20 minutes drive East of Schwabisch Hall (SW of Germany).

Sights:
Natur-und Heimatmuseum Vellberg
Eschenauer Stra&e 7 74541 / Phone(079 07) 877-0
Although very compact, the museum holds a large array of different information about
the city and its surrounding area. It includes fabrics and fashion of the turn of the century.
It also has a scaled model of the town during 1830. Also it has a showcase of stuffed
animals and flora representing the turn of the century. It has the detailed information of
the use of the different furs, bones, herbs and leafs. They exposed original arms; e.g.
lances, guns, knives and others. Bones and their different uses for their German ancestors
are explained and shown. Old coins and assorted treasures complete the tour.

Restaurants:
The town offers three pubs Kaserne; The Kaserne, the Gastehaus, and the Stadtverwaltung schloS.

Other recommendations:
Also, built within the Basilika a sign indicated an art studio. It seemed very small and we didn't take the time to look inside, now I wish I had.
