Island Travel
Posted: 2005-09-17 02:12 PM
Hi Wojciech,
seems to be that you´ve come along to almost every secret spot on the planet. Well, its always a pleasure for me to read your reports and take a look at all that nice pics you shot. Especially your trips to the antarctica and the southern pacific islands are very interesting for me. Even I´m originally not from an island, Ilike to island communities and landscapes. Every island is a world for itself. I study geography and travelling is for me more than hanging around and having a good time. Understanding the system earth is an issue which accomanies me all the time.
Anyway, hope to get more interesting pics, reports and so on at your site soon.
cheers,
Nico

condor airlines

Thanks Wojtiech
You are the most expert traveller that I know in cheap tickets. I paid much more for my flight to Halifax from Barcelona after checking during two months. I did not know about Condor.
I plan to go in November to Nunavut, Baffin Island. I’ll follow your recommendation with condor.
Regarding Miquelon. It is very little uninhabited but I could not go because of the treacherous weather. I only saw Saint Pierre.
I love “iagade” i “klubniki” very much. If I go to Poland, sure I will accept your invitation.
(Do you want to come to Terres Australes Françaises from Reunion beg. August? There is still one more seat. It would be great to travel with you and talk about travels)
Best

Wojciech, your dream to see the whole world!
Posted: 2005-07-20 03:24 AM
Privet Wojciech!
I am glad that my information about Uzbekistan might be useful to you.
I try to encourage you to fulfil your dream and visit the 100 % of the countries that you mention in your wonderful web page (I have a look at it very often to get inspiration! it is a web masterpiece!)
Regarding Saint Pierre et Miquelon, I think that the cheapest way (at least what I did in 2003) is flying with British Airways to Halifax, and then to Saint Pierre (I was in winter, with horrible cold wind and the boats from Point May, in Newfoundland, did not sail). But be careful: Saint Pierre is outrageous expensive! The cheapest pension will cost you at least 40 euro a night. Yes, the hostel owner will invite you in the night to a glass of Bordeaux wine and for breakfast you will be served café au lait with croissants in the bed, but it is not worth. Better do what I did: the seamen club gate is left open during the night, then sleep in the corridor, underneath the staircase. Bring a good sleeping bag. It is located besides the Basque Jai Alai square.
Regarding Turkmenistan (and to Kazakhstan), Sadir will help you, but visa can be granted to you in Charjew, in the Amu Daria River (if you arrive there by bus from Bukhara, then you have right to spend the night for free in the bus station, and the mattresses are comfortable, I can assure you). Trains work well in Turkmenistan, but Ashkhabad is a disappointing town; much better are the ruins of Merv, near Mary, where there was a caravanserai during the Silk Road period. And, pls, try to visit Khiva!!! one of my favourite towns in Asia. The train from Samarkand to Nukus stops in Urganch, from where there are only a few kilometres by jeep (or camel) to amazing Khiva.
The boat to Baku sails several times a week from Krasnovodsk. It takes 12 hours. Do not buy a ticket with cabin, just when tired sleep on the floor, together with the “speculants” selling “baraklo”. Given that you speak Russian, say that you work in Russia (that was what I said) and pay as “soviet”, or “Es-en-ge grasdanin”, because “inostrantsev”, or “chushesemtsev” as sometimes are called foreigners there, pay more.
In the boat terminal in Baku they rent beds in a huge dormitory for 5 US Dollars.
I have been in those countries many times, especially in Georgia and Armenia. If you need further information, pls, do not hesitate to contact me.
Do svidania

Uzbekistan Visa
Posted: 2005-07-17 06:55 AM
Hello Wojciech:
Regarding your Uzbekistan visa, pls, see the following link:
http://www.advantour.com/uzbekistan/information/visa.htm
It seems that presently all nationals except citizens of USA, France, Italy, Belgium, UK, Northern Ireland, Japan, Germany, Austria, Spain, and Switzerland, need a visa support from a licensed travel agency in Uzbekistan.
You can get the visa at the airport if in your country, Poland, there is no Uzbekistan Embassy.
In any case, pls, telephone my good friend SADIR KHALILOV to:
7-3712-339968, or FAX 7-3712-367948.
He lives in Tashkent and is an old friend of mine. In the past (about 20 years ago), when he was single, we travelled together several times to Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, experiencing many adventures, but the last time that we met was in 1999, I think. Furthermore, I think ythat his present job is related with the travel agencies, so he can supplied you good advice.
His young wife is very nice and prepares delicious Uzbek plov with lamb and raisins and “selione chai”. Pls, transmit my “privet” also to her. Both speak Russian, as well as Uzbek and Tartar (they are Tartars by nationality). Ask him to show you a very interesting Sufi “tekke” with whirling dervishes, not far from Tashkent.
Good luck

St Pierre & Miquelon
Posted: 2005-06-15 02:58 PM
Sorry about the lag, I was overseas and didnt have access to the net.
St Pierre & Miquelon seems like an interesting place, I do agree with you. I haven't been there yet. It is a few hours flight for me too.
If I'd need to get there from Europe, I'd probably flight from London Heathrow to St Johns Newfoundland, and then take the ferry to St Pierre & Miquelon. I do believe that would be the cheapest way to do it.
You can also take a look on this web link, http://www.st-pierre-et-miquelon.com/english/comment.php , It may be helpful.
Talk to you soon.
