Check your terms and conditions carefully before you make a car hire reservation from Spanish airports. Many are making an an upfront charge. Alicante, Murcia and Malaga are examples.

BEWARE of a recent phenomena the Spanish Car Hire fuel policy of FULL OUT and Empty Return. On rentals of less than 3 days this can be a very expensive addition, as the car hire supplier, for example GOLDCAR will charge you a full tank at the premium pump rate , this can be around ?80 for a small compact car like a punto ! and any unused fuel is lost at the end...
