Arles is ancient. When you walk the streets, you know you have walked on the same stones as people who knew Caesar, and perhaps Caesar himself. The texture and colour of the air and sky are indescribable, and puts one in mind of Van Gogh and his fellow impressionist painters. The people are friendly and quietly accepting of tourists.

Favourite spots: |
The old amphitheatres reminded me of Christians and lions, and bullfights. I chose one cafe and ate there each morning.

What's really great: |
I cannot begin to describe what the colour of the sky, the smell of lavender, and the feel of the sun did to my senses.
