I was au-pair here for 9 months. The place is a small town. It takes about 20 minutes with the train to Amsterdam, and about 3 minutes to get to Hilversum. Bussum is located in the green area of Noord-Holland, and houses mainly businesses and rich people.

Favourite spots: |
The Duckpond: There is a nice little pond hidden somewhere in the back of the recidential area. Naarden Vesting: There is an old big punker-like structure from the war. Is now rebuilt into offices.

What's really great: |
It's green, calm and a lot of nature. The downside is that the people living there are stuck-up, and people with cars will gladly run over 5 small children on a zebra crossing.
Sights: |
Nothing much. Amsterdam is close, and so is Hilversum. The dutch polititian Pim Fortuyn was shot on the Media-park in Hilversum.
Accommodations: |
Some Hotels etc. I'd recommend not going there, and if you want to see the area; go Hilversum.
Nightlife: |
Some different music-bars. Nothing special.
Hangouts: |
A few, rather nice, Irish Pubs. I only know one, though. And what is it called? Yeah, you guessed it: Murphy's!
Restaurants: |
A few rather ok one. If you walk along the street from the station, you'll come across a few that will feed the un-rich without looking down at you...
Other recommendations: |
Go biking. The area is really nice for that!
