You can see and experience this quaint historic English town by bicycle or on foot. From the Roman-era ruins, to the massive cathedral there is so much to see. This is also a very modern town with great food and shops.

We took the train from London to Canterbury, not quite 2 hours, and rented bikes at the train depot. From there armed with a bottle of water and a map we spent hours on the bikes and were able to see everything on our list.

The crescent moon over the tomb of St Thomas a Becket
 |
 |
Canterbury Cathedral- just breathtaking. The stained glass and the historic ( and literary) aspects make it that much more intriguing! In the book, The Spritual Traveler, I was advised to look up above the tomb of St Thomas a Beckt, famous by Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. According to the book ( and denied by the priests I asked) his mother was a Muslim woman,. So after his assasination, the symbol of Islam was placed high over his tomb. Now the books are fairly detailed about this as being true, however, the gift shop ladies seemed to know nothing of this, and the priest said the significance of the crescent was his view of heaven. Perhaps. But the mystery made it all the more interesting to me. I had to pay a tax to snap this photo. On the South Aisle of the Trinity Chapel you will find a wonderful stained glass window of the pilgrims on the road to Canterbury in the 13th century. Don't miss the gargoyles and symbols of the local pagan goddesses now banned to the basements.

there is a great pub where I was sitting taking this shot, and now I can't recall the name.

The town is very cycle friendly, and there are marked routes all over Kent county. Don't miss the Roman museum and the city wall which is great to walk or bike over for a great view of the city center. Norman castle is a treat for those of us who don't grow up with a castle in the middle of town, and St Augustine's Abbey is a beautiful place to see as well.

Accommodations: |
We only went for a bike trip and day visit, but there were youth hostels as well as larger hotels and small bed and breakfast style lodgings.

Hangouts: |
As with most of the UK , there are plenty of pubs! We stopped in at Fast Buck Freddies on St Peters street. THis place caught my eye because there is a Fast Buck Freddies in Key West near me, no relation. Same foods though...
