About half way between Kamloops and Jasper of the highway No. 5 lays the beautiful wilderness park called Wells Gray Provincial Park. Over 540.000 hectare of undeveloped wilderness. If you are after spoting wildlive, this is definatelly the place to go! Not many tourists stop here as they head in a rush for Jasper National Park. If you like to skip the typical tourist traks, see what the wilderness of canada is really about you should not miss it!

Favourite spots: |
My absolute favourite place in the canadian rocky mountains lays far away from mankind. You do have to rent out a canoue to get there. Fetch a map at the visitor centre and head for Clearwater Lake. Get yourself a canour for at least 2 days. If you have a week you might even reach Azure Lake which lays right behind it. There is no other way to get there, but by boat. Along the lake there are several great small spots where you can pitch your tent and enjoy the wilderness without meeting people for hours! It's one of the rare real romantic places on this planet! Onother spot not to miss are the Helmcken Falls which falls 137m. Nice if you love waterfalls.

What's really great: |
Nature, nature, nature. Spoting black bears and shaking there paws:-)) If you are lucky in the morning you might see a gorgeous reflection of the mountains on the lake. Some pictures are hard to tell if they are upside down or not;-)

|
Sights: |
Lakes, Mountains and lots of wildlife!
|
|
Accommodations: |
Do not forget your tent! It's the one and only thing that counts there. If you do not sleep inside nature, you have not been to the Rocky Mountains!
|
|
Other recommendations: |
If you head towards Yasper National Park you will see one of those big things! I am not sure what the name of that mountain is, but as far as I remember its the biggest one in the Canadian Rockys!

Your enthusiasm is infectious. You make me really envious. A bit more about the wildlife under sights would make it easily worth 5* |

Andreas,
Wonderful report - I agree, to be in the wilderness, you have to be IN the wilderness! Sounds like a terrific trip! |
