Malaysia Mania

I cannot possibly begin to describe how much I love Malaysia as a whole. Kuala Lumpur seems to embody all of the the good (and, of course, some of the bad) that is Malaysia. There are modern buildings, a business district, the Petronas Towers (tallest buildings in the world), Chinatown, small side streets and so much more. You really can't get bored here. And the people are so nice and helpful it's amazing.

Favourite spots:
Chinatown is really my favorite place here in KL. It's got fun shops lining the streets and a bustling crowd that may get a little overwhelming at times, but is so much fun to watch and be a part of.

What's really great:
The Malay people were the best part of visiting Malaysia. They are warm, open, friendly, always smiling and always willing to help out. They loved to chat and tell me about their lives and hear about mine. If you're lost, they'll give you directions, draw you a map or take you to your destination. If they can't help you they will find someone who can. Whether it's a sideways glance, a shy smile or a quick hello, you know you are always taken care of in Malaysia!

Sights:
The Batu Caves, just outside of KL, are pretty impressive. There is a tour that takes you there, as well as a rubber plant and other workshops around KL. It's a fun way to see the city and it's surroundings, and learn a little more about Malaysia in the process. Ask the guys at Pondok Lodge about tours.

Accommodations:
Pondok Lodge. I don't have the address, but check out Lonely Planet Southeast Asia on a Shoestring and you'll find it. They are friendly and helpful, and very knowledgable about the city and what's happening there. There is a common room where you can meet and hang out with other travelers. They also provide a common kitchen and other ammenities. It's close to a lot of shopping and eating, and even Chinatown isn't too far away!

Restaurants:
Eat from the carts on the street or the tiny local places. The more people inside the better the food is my general rule. So stop anywhere and see what the Malay people are eating and try it for yourself!
