I went to Costa Rice for 2 weeks when I was 16, with a group called Peace Works International. Their website is http://www.peacework-sintl.org On this trip we visited San Jose (the capital), a rainforest cabin retreat and a beach hotel near La Concha (a beach made entire of seashells). But the best part was the week we spent in La Perla, a tiny village where we lived with a family.

Favourite spots: |
La Perla, the tiny town where we stayed for a week doing community service, was fabulous. I stayed with a family (Roger, Patrycia, Fabian and Veronica) and got to really see how people live, what they do, how they feel and just submerge myself in their lives. It was unbelievable.

What's really great: |
I especially liked one day when we helped the school children make corn tamales for lunch. We had an assembly line going, and learned how to clean the ingredients, put everything together and cook the tamales. It was an amazing afternoon.

Sights: |
The rainforests of Costa Rica are phenomenal. We stayed in one where there were waterfalls, rivers and mountains. The diversity of nature in Costa Rica is a major draw to the country, and is worth exploring.

Other recommendations: |
La Concha is a beach that has no sand, but instead has millions of shells, crushed so fine that it's softer than sand! Here we went horse-back riding on the beach and could see all of the small houses that line the shore.
