A small hideaway city at the mediterranean sea. Infos about a short trip to africa. Last minute air tickets to Tunesia starting from about 120 Euro (from Germany) – so it’s a good opportunity leaving work for a couple of days.

After about 10 years I am going back there, and a lot has changed in that country. We arrived at Monastir airport, planning a trip around the north of the country. Instead of bargaining with hordes of taxi drivers, we found a metro station just hundred meters away from the terminal. The train is going north, up to Sousse and to the south, to Mahdia for some cents only! From Sousse we have taken the train to Tunis.

Favourite spots: |
TUNIS: Very close to the Tunis train station are lots of hotels in different categories starting from about 10 Euro. The bazaar and the sight are nearby in walking distance. Some “guides” showing you around a narrow paths in that “shopping-jungle”, only for a glass of tea at a carpet shop… Especially at the sunset time its amazing to sit at the terrace of the old house overlooking the old city, and a opportunity to find the “Hip waterpipe bars” of the old town, spending the evening. Nearby is the metro station of tunis going to the outer districts. Using the (European-like) public transports are more recommendable in Tunis than taxis. Sidi Bou Said is the most touristic place but worth to visit for a day! The train goes along the beaches, some place are really busy at the evening and weekends, popular by the people there. Some really good seafood restaurants are there (La Goulette).

What's really great: |
TABARKA: the bus journey was about 4 hours from Tunis, reading about this city as a up growing touristic, spot especially in scuba diving I was more than disappointed as I arrived there. There is nothing to do, out of the high season! No old city, no bazaar, the beach is not spectacular in any case: no reason to go there! Finally we ended up in MAHDIA. As I remember I found a flyer in hotel somewhere showing nice pictures about that city. The old part of the city is located on the tip of Cap Africa, surrounded by an old fort, the white painted portuguese style houses along the shore, narrow streets and back yards…

I wont say that the place is top secret, no tourists at all: no, its not! But the big hotels are out of the city, package tourists are leaving earlyin the afternoon, back to their free buffet. By walking around we found the Al Jazeera Hotel, with some 8 rooms, or so, its a family owned, a very friendly place with cosy rooms, overlooking the sea Things to do: hiking on the shore, the fishing piers, the sailors cemetery, the lighthouse… and if you are base in Mahdia you can easily visit Monastir and Sousse by metro on a day tour.
