Are you spending some time in Frankfurt? Waiting your flight going home? - you don’t like to stay in the big city?!
You would love to visit some castles and fortresses, beautiful cities like a cut out of an fairytale - Forests, mountains and meadows within a day tour instead?
Well, than follow me on an unforgettable day! First thing to do: Get a car! Budget offers are available at www. sixti .com - book in advance at the website only, for low as 7 USD per Day for a Smart-2-seater or a little more for a station wagon. You need to expect to drive 150-200 km that day. If you can’t book the car previously, you can find various car rentals at the main station.
From downtown just follow the blue signs (highway) towards the airport and from there to “Darmstadt”.
Favourite spots: |
Weinheim, our first destination is about 70km south of Frankfurt.
As I came first to Weinheim I did really not expected to find such a beautiful place. By the way, Heidelberg isn’t much further – but your day will be definitely to short to see all…
Back to Weinheim: from Darmstadt you still keep on the highway but follow no. A5 for another 40 km. Once there you only need to follow the signs “tourist. Ziele” to find the old city center.

What's really great: |
From far you already can see the overlooking mountain with its two fortresses.
In the old city there is actually nothing better to do then wandering around enjoying the old timbered houses, dating back to the 15th century, the castle or a stunning exotic park designed by the nobleness “von Berckheim“ some decades ago.
The fortresses on the mountain you can easily reach by your car. Especially on a clear day it is worth visit for the view on town and the high rising Odenwald mountain region.
“Burg Windeck“ the older one, is just a ruin left and is dated back to the 10th century protecting the nearby abbey Lorsch (UNESCO world heritage). The other fortress is quite a fake, its was erected between 1907 and 1928 in the style of a knights castle. There is a beer garden during the summer month. After spending a 2-3 hours in town its time to leave!

Sights: |
Depending your interest, the next place to visit is Lorsch, famous through its monastery listed in UNESCO world heritage since 1991. about 15-20 km away. In my opinion, I felt a bit disappointed visiting the place first time, there is only a portal remaining. Especially when short on time you follow the road signs north to Heppenheim: romantic alleys, old houses, the market place. The city is surrounded vineyards and another castle “Starkenburg”.
Accommodations: |
Not far from there, always heading north, your are passing the city of Bensheim. Worth visiting the central square with lots of timber framed houses more than 400 years old. The Restaurant “Walderdorffer Hof“ is located in the oldest building of the region, completed in 1470. Of course there is another castle overlooking the city: Auerbacher Schloss.
Nightlife: |
If you are really enjoy the touchable history there is another castle mentionable: Frankenstein. Right, Mary Shelley wrote the first horror novel in history based on some of her travel experiences along the Rhine valley.
Hangouts: |
Depending on the season and the weather conditions on the day of your visit, you can easily tailor your custom made tour: forest hikes, visiting castles or lovely old cities…
All the places are easy to reach, and close to the highway.

Hehe, I think that there are many places like that within 100 km radius from Frankfurt/Main... Germany is a fabulous country with countless lovely places like Weinheim or Happenheim. It's a great tip, though. I like the pictures! Many thanks for sharing! |
