Top secret island to everybody who loves wild nature and white sandy beaches!
|
HOW WE GOT THERE: While travelling around Thailand in august we been looking for a place to relax, go for some dives. I got the idea from a dutch backpacker on the Bangkok bus station on our way to the south. Before somebody was recommending Koh Tao as an interesting place along the thai east coast, as a famous dive area, close to Ko Pha Ngan accessible on ferry boat from Suratthani. Going there was just a solution, because the west coast is not a enjoyable place during that season. - I was really happy to hear about that secret place with lots of dive spots around, good enough to spend at least a week. Immediately I changed my plans, bought our bus tickets to Phuket first, where we visit some friends and the next day we head on to Hat Yai and Sungai Kolok (border crossing).

GENERAL INFORMATIONS: How to get there: not so easy! We went by bus from Phuket spend a night in Sungai Kolok (the border is closed for the night) on the border, cross the next morning and went by taxi to Kuala Besut to get on a ferry. They are leaving around 10.00 am and in the 2 in the afternoon. All in all makes it about one-and-half day travel. Don’t forget to add one hour in Malaysia to thai-time!!! – Else you easily miss the boats. Around the pier you find different stores selling the tickets and giving you information’s about the “resorts”. Make your choice, because the ferry brings you straight to the beach you want to. Many restaurants are found at the pier.

What's really great: |
Two islands: Perhentian Kecil is the small one, Perhentian Besar the big. I recommend to stay on the big! Flora Bay is a backpacker beach with different categories of bungalow, the more luxury places are at the west side of P.-Besar. THINGS TO DO: Explore the jungle on your own! (Don’t forget to take drinking water with you) there lots of trails! Find exotic animals: ants in the size up to 3 centimeter, bats small as colibri birds and scary big warans hiding in the bushes, between the rocks on the beaches and even under water. Snorkelling: watch sea turtles along the west side bays. Scuba diving: at least 30 spots around the two islands!!! boat dives only! about 10 – 15 EUR per dive! Relaxing, Relaxing, Relaxing … in a hammock under a palm tree. Please respect that the state is quite strict muslim. Some stores sell beer to the visitors. The villagers are very friendly. If you look for a noisy place to have parties every night you better stay in Ko Pha Ngan in Thailand.

Accommodations: |
Various, in different categories... at least a 30 places on both islands. Up to date info get from the pier in Kuala Besut! By the way: my son was not even a year old that time. The whole trip was fine! The idea taking the speed boat to the island was not that good, because the sea was a bit rough, and he cryed a lot... The kids of the villagers played with him most of the time and he had lots of fun! - the beach is fabulous for kids!

Thanks Ralph, for writing this report. It is an enjoyable read and I particularly liked the first photo that you have uploaded in the report. It is really lovely. I've personally not been to Pulau Perhentian, the furthest I've been in Terengganu is Kuala Terengganu, the Capital but I did make a trip along the coastline. It was a nice drive.
I found your report to be very informative and accurate. Terengganu is rather strict muslim state unlike the capital (K.Lumpur) where people are more liberal, so its worth cautioning people about that.
Anyway, thanks for writing and I hope to read more from you soon.
Cheers.
