An astonishing setting, the trip down from the plateau to the coastal strip of the Sinai peninsula in Egypt. The road down gorge/canyon is quite an engineering feat, its maintenance a challenge to be admired!

The excited babble was muted by the descent, and then the Gulf of Aqaba -just so very different from other places I have been. The hotel complexes, some completed, added a stark contrast to the barren beauty of the rocky desert behind and the glimpses of blue sea. The warning about taking plenty of water with everything, served to add emphasis to the potential harshness of the heat and surroundings. Fantastic.

Favourite spots: |
The bedouin town of Tarabin was for me very special. Yes the shopkeepers and vendors were very keen to sell you items, but they were friendly and had a ready smile. I got by without any arabic - shameful of me, but full marks to them! The have some quite big potholes there too. I was also enchanted by the perfumery in Dahab, Now Dahab is also a very good place to go, but I particularly enjoyed being beguiled by tales of glass making and essential oils - and then the fragrances.....

What's really great: |
VERY special is St Katherine's Monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai. Unfortunately, thousands of other people find the place special too, but none the less there is something extraordinary about this holy site. Could wish some of the guides would mute their mobile phones while inside....

Accommodations: |
The Coral Hilton Resort in Nuweiba was excellent. It has wonderful staff, very good food, and good facilities. The different themed evenings temted one to sample lots of variety. I particularly enjoyed the egyptian food. The beach bar staff had a go at remedying my lack of Arabic which was fun and challenging! The shops at the hotel have a good range and very kind and helpful staff.

Restaurants: |
I enjoyed eating at the Blue Bus in Tarabin. Something entirely captivating about eating out on cushions, next to the sea, under the moon-light. The service was fine, the food good washed down with delicious fresh lemonade and the atmosphere was just wonderful. With the colourful lights of the busy town behind and the drums being played at various spots - just amazing.
In Dahab, I lenjoyed Shark's Restaurant. Very good food, and the service was thoughtful and made me feel good, which was nice as this is a very male environment.

Very nice indeed. Was very informative for someone who has never been to Egypt. Well done.
