Phitsanulok once served as the capital of Thailand for 25 years. It is a fairly lively city and a good place to stay if you want to visit the lower north of the country. It is a good base to make a visit to Sukhothai.
Favourite spots:

Wat Phra Si Ratana Mahathat - this contains the Chinnarat Buddha. This huge, and much copied image, is second only to The Emerald Buddha in Bangkok.

The Chinnarat Buddha, the city is easy to walk around and there are many good, cheap places to eat!
Sights:

Lots of other cheap restaurants close by.
