Bangkok, or Krung Thep as it is known to the locals, Is the capital with a population of about 6 million. Well i felt as though there was just a non stop traffic jam and in the hot season it can be unbearable!
Favourite spots:
Grand Palace
Have to admit that Bangkok is not my favourite place in Thailand - too noisy, too much traffic, pollution and unbearably hot at times! Like the area around Ramkhamhaeng though where i stayed with friends.
What's really great:
Chakri Maha Prasat
Wat Phra Kaew, which houses the Emerald Buddha, is impressive as is the Grand Palace. Wat Arun, Wat Mahathat and Wat Pho are also worth seeing.
Sights:
Chakri Maha Prasat
Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew.
Accommodations:
Wat Arun
Fortunate enough to stay with friends so no recommendations.
Restaurants:
Visiting the Grand Palace
Very cheap and tasty food around Ramkhamhaeng or other university areas.
Other recommendations:
Roof Detail Grand Palace
Take a boat trip along the canal system or shop for bargains at the Chatuchak weekend market.
Some beautiful pictures- thanks for the recap on Bangkok- sounds like it is too crowded and the architecture may not be worth putting up with all the negatives! thanks for the information!
Reviwed your Bangkok report. Brought back fond memories. I just posted anew report on Hong Kong and China. Check it out and let me know what you think.
Thanks for your report! I feel much the same as you do about this city! I hate it actually; never have I met such a great concentration of people pretending to be friendly only to trick you into their friend's silk shops or get a free tank of gas for you sitting in their tax (this one I STILL don't understand). Still there are some wonders here as you point out. The food and architecture help you forget about the horrors of Khoasan Road on a hot, muggy day (which is every day, I guess). Glad that you could stay with some friends there!
