South of the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula (aka Cancun!) you'll find a more charming stretch of beach. The Mayan Riviera is home to remote beaches, crystal waters, hidden ruins and more spacious resorts.

Away from the commercialization and craziness that is Cancun, the adventure traveller can find many wonders within the Yucatan Peninsula, the Mayan Riviera, the Mexican Caribbean, while still being able to find rest and relaxation in paradise. Between Cancun, Mexico all the way to Belize, you will find a number of new all-inclusive resorts. Nothing at all like Cancun. The adventure traveller will want to check out the ecotourism movement that is beginnng to attract many. Go before all is discovered! I found the perfect balance between exciting days of discovering deep cenotes in the lowland jungle, only to come home to my resort and be greeted with fresh papaya juice. =) Bliss!

Favourite spots: |
Playa del Carmen- the main port for all boats and ferries departing for the island of Cozumel, where worldly divers embark to explore the second largest reef system on the planet. Lots of quaint shops here, you can make a good deal with the silver jewlers if you smile and use your spanish ;) Anywhere in the Caribbean waters- ah snorkelling in crystal clear aqua. Ruins at Tulum, Mexico- breathtaking views of this Mayan garden city perched on cliff edges over the Mar Caribe.

What's really great: |
Parasailing along the coast gives you a bird's eye view of jungle meeting ocean, look closer, and you may be able to see through the clear waters below and spot a turtle or two swimming along! Alltournative Expiditions and Adventures day trip: start out by sea kayaking out into an expanse of the coral reef, return to the shore for yummy fresh fruit snacks, then head deeper into the lowland jungle (on an old Swiss Army all terrain vehicle) to visit a Mayan family and their home. After a look around at all the beautiful avocado and other fruit trees, and their pet monkey, descend into the cenotes and snorkel around. Perhaps you'll find your way back out into the ocean! Return from the waters and have lunch prepared by the Mayan family, make sure you note and appreciate what you are eating and how they prepare it.

Grand Palladium Resort: fairly new, hospitable staff, great opportunities for travel outside of the resort, secure. Food buffets are okay. For a no-worries escape this is great...you can daytrip and return to meals and drinks and nightly entertainment that you already paid for, no need to search around.
