Through Bear Country: Prevost Provincial Park

  6 votes

Shawbridge travelogue picture
Prevost Provincial Park is but a short 45 minutes bus ride from downtown Montreal, yet once entering the reserve, it feels like you're in another world. The rural landscape is captivating, and the vegetation and wildlife are exquisite. With a map, the incredibly enchanting lake would be clearly marked out. Do drop by there because the mere sight of it is rejuvenating to the spirit and mind.

Favourite spots:

Hiking alone here can be more scary than rewarding. Be sure to find out first if there had been any bear sightings before taking the plunge. I would not recommend hiking during the snowy winter.

What's really great:

Quick tips: Do not go alone like I did because it can be dangerous. I found out only after the hike that there were actually bears in there, and that fall was basically feeding season before they go into hibernation. Whatever you decide to do, be sure you arm yourself with water and some food, as well as a good map. Remember also to reserve some time for the return trip. I got carried away trying to reach a vantage point and forgot that by 1530hrs the sunlight would pretty much be gone. Don't suffer the anxiety and fear which I went through. It's no fun running out of a forest while bear grunts are nearby and you're all alone.

Sights:

Crystal clear lakes, great view points from hill tops overlooking the dense vegetation beneath, tiny cars strolling down curvy and endless roads.

Other recommendations:

Armed with a map, you will be able to find several quiet and terribly charming lakes and vantage points.
