I have been twice already in this legendary town (first time in Soviet Union) but is is worth a day to wonder again around the channels, churches and palaces. St Peter is compact, so there is no need to use the subway or buses.
For the first time I went to the other side of Neva River to see the famous battleship "Aurora". It is still there, open to the public in the middle of the day and the entry is free!
To climb up to the cupola of St Isaac Church you have to pay 150 roubles. Museum will cost you 250... They pay at the moment around 30 roubles fer US dollar...
St Peter center today was almost empty. I met very few tourists. And I liked it. It is better to enjoy this atmospheric city out of the crowd...
The only public computer in the hostel seems to be broken forever, but they were so nice and allowed me to use the other one at the reception. Thank you Sasha!

Sep 18, 2011 02:00 PM North Russia: train goes every second day!
In Sortavala, close to the border of Finland I stay in Ladoga Hotel. They offered me a bed in the huge 6-bed room for 400 roubles - not bad...
Now, how to get from Sortavala to St Petersburg? There is a single railway track and they have a train going north on even days and south on uneven days...
I tried to buy the tickets in advance but I found the station closed with a written info that it will be open only 1 hour before train departure. OK.
It takes more then 6 hours to St Petersburg, but since it was day-time service (dep. 7.20 am) I decided to buy "platskartny" class for 406 roubles. What is "platskartny"? Do you remember the hard sleepers in China? - that's similar class.
They also serve free boiling water for your tea or soup at the end of the car...
In St Petersburg the hostel business is gwowing - now there is a choice of 20 hostels or so... Wow! I went by subway to SPB (Why not KGB? :) ) Hostel at Moskovsky Prospekt... 750 roubles per bed in the triple room, clean sheets and big towel included!

Sep 17, 2011 02:00 PM Valaam Monastery on Lake Ladoga
This is holy place for the orthodox pilgrims. I took a boat from the Sotavala jetty at 9 am. The captain do not issue tickets - he just took 1300 roubles for the round trip to the Valaam Island to his pocket. The hydrofoil journey took us almost one hour. Can you imagine beautiful, forested archipelago of 50 rocky islands?
That is Valaam. In the 14th century on the main island the holy monks built the monastery. After being destroyed by Swedes, after fires it is now beautifully restored inside. I climbed little hill to the gate and visited two churches - lower war empty, but in the brilliant upper church there was Sunday service with great singing to hear.
Then I took a walk to the distant sketes (little sub-monasteries) Limited time allowed me to visit only 3 of them... Great day!

Easy day - after nights on the trains and planes I spend first night in the hotel i Petrozavodsk. They sell beds in 4-beds room. And I was there alone like a king for just 660 roubles. The bus took me to Sortavala on Ladoga Lake. Ladoga seems to be he largest lake in Europe.
Sortavala is nicely located i the long, picuresque bay. I met ere lovely people: Svetlana an Vitaly publish ineteresting magzine about their town - between the world wars Sortavala was Finish... Great pople they took me for the walking tour and show the laces of interest. Then w had a tea in their timber house. Thak you dear friends!

Another night on the Russian train. Kupe means 4-berth compartment. They are very hospitable: offering brandy and vodka plus bread and saussage... I landed in Pertozavodsk on the Onega Lake. This is the gateway to the famous museum of the wooden architecture on Kizhi Island - one of the 1600 islands on this beautiful lake. I was lucky: they still offered the boat hydrofoil tour to Kizhi - it cost hefty 2200 roubles round trip, but it is worth if you want to see the fascinating wooden churches placed on UNESCO World Heritage list. I will publish the pictures - then you will understand. Haavy rain in Petrozavodsk but great weather duryng my stay on Kizhi - I was lucky again - theank you for kjeeping your fingers crossed!

Sep 14, 2011 02:00 PM Solovetsky Island - The White Sea!
I know Red, Black, Yellow Seas... Now I am going to the White Sea! I left the train on the poor Kem station. Darkness. I found somebody to ask for the bus to the port. First one at 6.45! Junk bus took me for 20 roubles to Rabocheostrovsk pier. Yes! we have the ship to the Solovetsky Island - 800 roubles each way. But keep in mind that this is the last sail in the season. If you will stay longer you will pay 2000 for the private motorboat, if there will be one! It was windy and rainy when we sailed - again an the junk ship...
But I reached Solovki - one of these mistic places. There is monastery enlosed in the Kremlin (castle). During Stalin period there was one of the hardest gulags located. I had enough time to visit gulag museum in the village and the impressive monastery.
The weather was bad = I decided to take same boat back in the evening.

Sep 13, 2011 02:00 PM Murmansk - north of the Polar Circle
I landed in Murmansk at 4 am... Cold! The first bus goes to the city around 6 am. But friendly Russian took me there before in his car... Vadim was waiting for me (thank you Vadim for your hospitality!) I spent whole day visiting the places of interest. The main one is first nuclear icebreaker LENIN. They say you can visit the ship every day at noon. But when we came to the harbor (me and some 20 Russians) they said -No excursion today! Nobody knows why. "Bardachok!" - Russians said. Then I went to the Alyosha monument overlooking the Murmansk bay. Can you imagine sone 20-m high concrete soldier? Worth to see. City transport is cheap: you pay 15 roubles (Moscow-28) for the ride on the bus or trolleybus. I took themto visit the church and wooden monastery. I am 69 deg North. Next night I will spent on the train...

It was 11 am when I landed in Moscow SVO airport. They have excellent airport to city train but it costs 320 roubles. The alternative for the backpacker is to take the city bus to Rechnoy Vokzal subway station for 28 roubles and go onward by subway (28 roubles to any station).

I have been to Moscow 6 or even 8 times but it is nice to stroll again around to the old, well known places... Memories...

No chocolate, sorry, but I was sitting today on the Red Square eating chocolate icecream... And later I went to the Old Arbat to say good evening to my favourite Russian singer Bulat Okudzhhava...
In the middle of the night I will fly by low cost airline plane through the Polar Circle to Murmansk. Brrr...

Sep 11, 2011 02:00 PM To Barnaul. Remember the fourth Lenin!
I spent the night in the regular Russian family flat. Ksyusha invited me and we were talking about the world all evening. Great people!
Then I took the bus to Barnaul - The capital city of Altaisky Krai. Some 100 kms before Barnaul the sun was shinning again. I left the backpack in the hotel and took a long walk around the town, visiting nicely decorated orthodox churches, parks and climbing the hill for the great view of the Ob river.
On this hill I found the first monument of Lenin. OK. The second one was on the main street - Lenin Prospect. They say it is the Lenin-Torreador (he is keeping something like the muleta in his hand).
The third Lenin Stays on the Sovetov Square - this one is not so important. But the Fourth one - At Oktabrya Sq is very important for the budget traveller - right next to Lenin there is a bus 144 stop. This bus goes to the airport and costs only 25 roubles (in the hotel they offer the taxi for 400 roubles) So remember: Lenin no.4 for the airport - I do fly tomorrow!

Russian Altai, Lake Teletskoye. The overnight stay in the private house in Artybash cost me 350 roubles - It is hard to find something cheaper. For the internet service in the post offices they charge 1 rouble per minute.
We have the rain from the morning today.
The main attraction of the Lake Teletskoye surrounded by the thick taiga are the boat excursions. I want to take the one to the Korbu Waterfall. The say that it costs 1000 roubles per person and takes 3-4 hours.
Will they depart today?
