yuliangpang - Apr, 22 2009 08:04am Temples in China for western visitors are like the churches in Europe for Chinese. Maybe what would like to tell you same thing with different stories. There are four guys usually, and you only caught two. They hold different instruments at hand, representing different prays or wishes, protecting different directions, East, South, North and West. The one holding a sword at hand is protecting the South, praying for feng in Chinese (wind). The other one holding a music instrument, i do not how to call it, is protecting the west, meaning in Chinese Tiao (difficult to interpret, maybe means soft here), there are another two reprenting North and East, meaning Yu( Rain) and Shun(means as the people wishes), so if you put the four together in Chinese, Feng Tiao Yu Shun, meaning both the wind and rain are not so harmful, that usually used in old China for a prosperous and good year, no storm and no flood. hope it will be helpful. esfahani - May, 15 2009 03:05am thanks for explaining, my friend. the other 2 guys were sitting oposite...
