Andy,
I am so glad you are enjoying San Diego - my brother and his family live there and I always enjoy visiting.
It is hard to describe how much California has changed in the last 40 years. The population has grown ten times what it was in 1960, mostly from the influx of immigrants, many of whom have poor English skills and little education. I wish we had the safety net you spoke of. My husband teaches in a low income middle school and speaks both Spanish and some Vietnamese - many of his students, even in 7th and 8th grades, speak little English.
Hollywood is perhaps the worst because it attracts so many mentally unstable people looking for fame.
I think this is why I am drawn to the mountains and the north coast. They are not as affected by all the population growth. Having seen the Bay Area, you can understand the urge to "get away"!
Hope the trip continue well! Would love to catch up with you when you get ready to fly back, if you are in the area!

Andy,
I read your travel logs and because I am too much connected to the places you're visiting, I wanted to wish you having good time. Yosemite and Grand Canyon are places that you shoudn't miss. Good luck and enjoy your trip.

Andy,
Thanks for your answer. I'll think about buying another lens because we will be away in two weeks. We are going to Hong Kong and even though lenses may be cheaper there I rather buy one at home as I cannot distiguish between real and counterfeit

Your photos are truly beautiful, not only the compostion and theme, but also the quality. I take it that you are happy with you EOS 400D.
What lens do you use? The one that come standard with the EOS. I ask you because I have 350D and I am not at all impressed by the lens that comes with it. That's why I use a lens of my EOS two times back., which I bought in 1999.
I am now thinking of buying EF-S 17-85. F/4.0-5.6 ISUSM. The only problem is that this lens is almost as expensive as an EOS 350D.

I was just stunned when I popped on this evening to log another journal. There were so many truly wonderful reports last month. I am so honored to have been chosen. Thank you so much. I am on a very VERY slow dial-up connection, 50 miles from the Pakistan border, in the middle of no where, so I won't be able to thank the members that have sent me such kind words, but thank you so much!
