Bali\'s lush unspoilt East Coast

Amed travelogue picture
So many visitors don't escape the hustle and bustle of Bali's touristy Kuta & Legian region to see the beautiful lush green countryside of the east coast. In fact most people would find it hard to believe that on the the other side of the island scenery like this exists.

Favourite spots:

Amed is a definate favourite hideaway. The attraction lies in it's seclusion far from the crowds. Tulamben is one of the best dive sites off Bali. It includes a wreck dive and a coral wall. Well worth getting wet and blowing some bubbles!

What's really great:
Definately escaping the constant you buy, you buy.
This gives you the opportunity to see those beautiful rice terraces that are in all the glossy tourist brochures. Plus also the chance to see the locals going about their daily business , happy to give you a smile and a wave while still being untouched by tourism.

Sights:

Diving at Tulamben is pretty good and certainly up there with other dive spots we have been to. There are 2 dives here, the first a coral wall dropoff down to about 18 metres and the 2nd the wreck of the USAT Liberty down to about 26 metres.
With visibilty of about 20 metres and loads of inquisitive marine life it is worth the effort.

Accommodations:

At Amed the secluded Santai Hotel (www.santaibali.com) is not cheap but it is worth every cent. Beautiful individual thatched bungalows that feature four poster beds with mosquito nets, open air sandstone bathrooms, lofts, spacious balconies overlooking the garden or beach and pool. The little touches like the thermos of hot coffee and tea delivered unbeckoned each morning to your room. It is worth the splurge.
At Tulamben there is not the luxury but Coral Sea bugalows are cheap, no hot water or airconditioning but if your main reason to be there is to go diving they are fine. There is a dive centre attached to the hotel as well as a restaurant.

Hangouts:

Don't come here if you are looking for nightlife! There are no pubs anywhere nearby.

This siounds good. I'm now planning my summer holidays (flights tend to fill up for July pretty soon) We have been to Indonesia innumerable times, but these days we (I'm Dutch) need a visa and it's only valid for 4 weeks (instead of the free visa for 60 days) The bads thing is it cannot be extended. We will spend three weeks in Bali and three weeks in malaysia. Amed sounds good. Did you ever go to Medewi and Pemuteran?
