La Bella Roma

The 4th visit to Rome didn't disappoint. Every year I go back I think I've seen it all, but every year Rome surprises me with yet more wonders. The people get friendlier, and the more I learn the language the more I feel at home there.

My 4th visit to Rome for the same 3 days in May was as splendid as ever. The main reason for the trip was the tennis tournament at the beautiful Foro Italico, but we managed to slip in some sightseeing beforehand. The very handy Planet 29 guesthouse welcomed us as ever a short distance from the bus dropoff and within 10 minutes we were wandering through the warm streets, smelling pizza and craving icecream.

Favourite spots:
Piazza Navona, Fontana de Trevi, Foro Imperiali, Palantine Hill (and the secret keyhole).

What's really great:
Eating outside, really late with great cheap house wine. Meeting a couple of mad Italian guys (aka Antonio Banderas and Tom Jones) at a late night bar, along with the equally crazy barman (Robert de Niro), then singing O Sole Mio and Amore with them and a group of Norwegians and some Austrians.

Sights:
Not secret anymore!
Not secret anymore!
The view from the top of the Palantine Hill, with the orange trees behind. Then finding the Secret Keyhole and discovering its marvellous secret!

Accommodations:
Rome travelogue picture
Pension Planet 29, via Gaeta. Very handy for Stazione Termini and only about a 20 minute walk from the Trevi Fountain. Friendly staff, cute rooms (some with hilarious murals). NB - no breakfast.

Restaurants:
Ristorante La Famiglia, via Gaeta. This restaurant is right opposite the hotel, and if you get a room facing the road you can keep an eye out for people about to pay their bill. If you leg it down the stairs and across the road fast enough, you get there just as they leave the table, then it's yours!

I liked your report, I'm a tennis buff and would have loved to see the Italian Open part of the master series in person.

Is that a picture of Felicano Lopez?
