Of the eight countries ive visited in South America, Chile is the one that I would most like to visit again. It offers a wide range of climates, from desert to arctic, from coastline to among the highest peaks on the globe.

Chile is that funny thin looking country on maps, only 380km at the widest point but it has a Pacific coastline stretching 4000km, the capital Santiago, population 5-6 million is about in the center. Incas once ruled here, the spanish arrived in 1536 and it remained a colony till 1810. When we visited in 1987 buildings still showed bullet holes from the 1973 Pinochet military coup. The city offers amazingly a lot to tourists, differently to others in South America, somewhat more like mediteranean than latin america (also Buenos Aires). Querying the blond women, we learnt that a lot germans settled here too over the centuries. - the Bellavista sector of the city for stores and entertainment, offers handicraft and also every modern need a traveller requires. We had traveled along the Andes and got geared up again. - Parque Metropolitano, get ready to hike here, it includes hills!

barbequing again after six weeks of pasta like dishes

Hungry-to-learn students, greet visitors in the streets, not to beg but to share knowledge about other countries. One of these invited us to his home and threw on a barbeque of kilo large steaks to keep up our chat. After six weeks of only learning and speaking portugeuse and spanish, here we could converse properly with the locals in english again.

Vina del Mar, an hours drive to the coast makes a wonderful day trip to the beach (very clean).

|
We made a four day trip down south by train to Puerto Montt. From there nice day trips like Chiloe Island with its churches, and lake regions with volcanoes.
