Waya Island - Gateway to the Yasawas

I have written my travel report on our week at Octopus Resort which is situated on Waya Island - but I still have more to share! As my place name was accepted after my report was finished, I'd like to take this opportunity to share more.

Rounding the point
Rounding the point
Waya Island is one of the largest in the Yasawa group of islands - or archipelago. It is to the northwest of the Vitu Levu which is considered one of the main islands of Fiji (Suva and Nadi are on this main island).

I would consider it the gateway to the group, even though just south of Waya Island are Kuata, Wayasewa and Wayalailai Islands.

Waya Island also hosts the largest peak in the group.

It takes approximately 1.5hrs to travel out to Waya Island.
We used the transfer boat from the resort but there are other options.

The Yasawa Flyer is a large, 200 person capacity boat that travels up and down the group each day. I understand that it is pretty reasonably priced and you can purchase package deals for a week or longer. The Yasawa Flyer is run by a group called Awesome Adventures and there is a lot of information on the internet.

As I mentioned, I have completed a travel log on our adventures at Octopus Resort - http://www.globosapiens.net/travel-infor---mation/Yasawa-2302.html

Favourite spots:

All of our week was spent on Waya Island - mostly at Octopus Resort but we did have the opportunity to cross over to the other side of the island and spend some time at Nalauwaki Village.

As there is no cellular coverage on the island - or computers - you might think that you would be at a loss for things to do. Not the case at all. Octopus has a fabulous relationship with Nalauwaki Village and the villagers are very welcoming. They make up most of the staff at the resort.

When travelling over to the village, please make sure that you remove your hats and sunglasses. Headwear is reserved for the Chief of the Village. You must also carry your backpacks at your side and women must cover your knees and your shoulders.

What's really great:
The Methodist Church. Not the solar panel and satellite to the right

Attending the Methodist church service on Sunday morning in Nalauwaki was amazing. I would advise you to head over the hill as early as you can in the morning as the heat can make you sweat - alot.
When we got to the village, lots of heads poked out of doorways in curiosity. Say "Bula" and you will receive a Bula greeting in return and a large Fiji smile.
The church was concrete and there are large fans inside - but once again we were a little surpirsed by how long it took for the service to start! Once the service began, the singing of the village choir lifted our moods like nothing I have ever experienced.

I didnt get the chance to take the hike to one of the highest peaks on Waya - but the people that I know that went were very impressed with the scenery and very pleased that they made it up in the heat that we had!

After doing a little research, Waya Island appears to be a very important archeological site. One of the universities from Hawaii come all the way out here. Pottery has been discovered near Yalobi (on the south side of Waya Island) that is nearly 3000 years old. Scientists have also discovered bone fragments that display evidence of cannabalism.

We did not witness any cannabalism whilst we were on Waya Island :)

Other recommendations:

Taking a walk to the other side of the beach from Octopus is a small village with an amazing crafts store. I didnt want to buy too much but as my jewellery making efforts were not as successful as I had hoped, I had to take something home!

If you are staying at Octopus on Waya Island, keep an eye out on Sunday afternoons and Friday early evening. As the school is south of Waya, the children of Nalauwaki are taken to school by boat and board there for the week. When they return home, they leap from the boat and run up the beach laughing and smiling. This all happens in front of the resort and is a wonderful and happy experience to watch.

Not long ago, you needed a special permit to visit the islands in the Yasawa Group. Thats not the case these days, however ensure that you are ready to ease into every activity and you dont live by your watch!
