waiheke island

Posted: 2006-11-30 04:15 PM
good morning marianne

it is the places in our backyard that sometime we get to last - but they are usually some of the best! i was not disappointed by waiheke and now i really want to spend some more time there.
the last 2 photos were taken on 2 separate trips - hence the big difference in the skies! i have some more photos to upload once i get the chance.
it is only 19km long but as you drive out to the eastern side, the roads turn into gravel.

i hope you get the chance to come and visit
have a lovely day

Marianne, Re: dhwaja stambha

Posted: 2006-11-28 08:29 AM
Hi Marianne,

in response to :
Akhila,
I love these colourful temples. What is the pillar used for? Or what does it symbolise?

A dhwaja stambha (flag staff) is part of the basic architecture of any south Indian temple, primarily used for holding a flag for festive occasions, also has carvings of the vahana* of the presiding diety. Symbolically, this is also known as the 'spinal cord' of the temple and is located at the entrance to the temple, in front of the gopuram(main gateway). People pay respects to this before they enter into the main temple.

please feel free to ask any other questions - you do have access to my email / contact.

Best regards,
Akhila

I've been...

I've been mainly at school. I wish I could come here more often but it's been a little challenging. I have been on a few school trips. So I'll make some reports. And I'll add more pictures. (only five more left!)

I'll talk to you later!

Regarding Gythion!

Posted: 2006-11-27 08:18 AM
Hi Marianne!
Nice to be back! Really sorry for not replying to your e-mail almost...one year ago. Anyway, Limeni, where the shots were taken, isn't that close to Gythion. Think the distance is 30-36 km. Having been to Peloponissos, I am sure that you are familiar with Mani. Mani is the name that describes the area of the third leg of Peloponissos. Personally,it is one of my favourite places in Greece. I have more photos but not that good since the weather was always a bit misty when I went there. I know the area very well and I think I may write a report about it as soon as I have nicer photos!

Thanks for looking at my pictures!

Ossuaries in UK

Posted: 2006-11-23 03:02 PM
Hi there Marianne, the ossuary I visited is the one at St Leonard’s Church in Hythe on the South coast. Here’s a travel tip and a second photo,

The other one in the UK, which I think is smaller, is in Rothwell in Northamptonshire.

Thanks again

Hi Marianne,

Thanks for reading and rating my Cordoba report.

You are quite right. The white houses and arid landscapes of Spain are quite reminiscent of Greece.

It is interesting that when you move out of Andalusia back towards the centre of the country it is reaqlly noticeable that the buildings change back to stone rather than the whitewashing.

Cheers,
Kerrie

Hi Marianne,
Thanks for your flattering comment re my Madrid report. I tried to describe the atmosphere rather than just report the facts.
Its a great city, it sounds like you will need to put Spain on your wish list.
Take care,
Kerrie
