Kilronan

Dear Hugh,
Thanks for signing my guestbook. Our house was built in 1853 by a Church of Scotland minister. This maybe how it got its name as Kilronan literally means the church of Ronan. It might have been that he had visited the Aran Islands.
Regards,
Linda

Hello Hugh

Hugh,
I wanted to say how much I enjoyed chatting with you the other evening! I am glad your daughter got a chuckle out of my name story. You would be surprised how many Americans do not recognize what Eire means. Many confuse it with Lake Erie. It gets misspelled all the time. People who do recognize it are either of Irish descent or do crossword puzzles. My Mother is from Hartleppol, UK, but her parents were from Ireland. My Father's parents were British and Scotch. For the first 15 years of my life, my Grandfather refused to call me by my first name and instead shorted my middle name of Kathleen to Kay, calling me Kaybaby.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Eire

Ballooning
Posted: 2005-09-01 04:52 AM
Hugh
Are you kidding? I think peace of just floating in the air must be wonderful. My ideal would be to go ballooning in Africa, as part of a safari and see all the animals underneath on the plains. Now that would be bliss.
But if I have to do it in the UK, then so be it...
Take care

Story Behind the Name
Posted: 2005-08-31 06:20 AM
Hugh,
My Mother took my name from a stamp. Being a practical woman, although she was in labor, she insisted on waiting for the mail to arrive before going to the hospital. Having had two sons already, she had reconciled herself to never having a girls and had not even thought of girl's names. After I was delivered, she was back in her hospital room trying to think of a name, when she remembered the mail and decided to go through it. She received a letter from her Aunt Lillian of Cork. She took my name from that envelope. I have always been thankful that her Aunt didn't live in, say Siberia or Katmandu. Eire suits me just fine. I still have the envelope.
I am so glad that your daughter had the chance to touch a dolphin. They are amazing creatures. So smart! And beautiful to watch swim!

'Anchor man'

Hi Hugh
Thanks for the comment about my photo. No, it's not near the sea but south of Salamanca near the border with Portugal.
There was no particular relationship between the different stone carvings, four to each pillar except that they were all excellently done.
I think it is an integral part of the lower stone - but as always I only knew what questions to ask after the opportunity had passed.
Thanks again
David
