Well said my friend, I rated this at one star which I am told is regarded as spam, it is better coming from you than me but I do get quite irate at commercial enterprises trying to get free adverts on this great site!,Cheers, Tony.

Subway vs. Buses in Beijing

Posted: 2009-03-20 05:42 PM
The subway system is great, but does not extend to all parts of the city yet, as it is still under construction. Still, it's far better than it was when I first visited in 2001. Back then, there were two subway lines, now there are 10, with more coming online all the time.

The bus system however is a hodge-podge and very difficult to figure out. You might be able to get info at the airport.

I only used it because my wife speaks fluent Mandarin and she can understand which bus to take and where to take it from. Having said all that, the bus system is incredibly extensive and has hundreds, if not thousands of buses operating all day long. If you can, ask about getting a bus pass. Beijing bus passes use and RFID chip and it scans everytime you board a bus or subway, and is .4 RMB, as opposed to the regular fare of 1 RMB. The savings isn't all that much in the whole scheme of things, but is a time saver, as you're not fumbling for change all the time.

Beijing and the Summer Palace

Well, we spent almost 4 hours there, and only saw 2/3 of it. It's probably an all day thing (6 hours at least), just because of the sheer size.

pleasure to asssist. as far as i know no train but busservice to badaling. two days ago we went from jinshanling to simaitai. no restrictions. only at two parts you are leaving the wall itself to pass a tower not accessible. fun. but starts to get crowded as well. lots of salespeople.
Hostel in Bejing is downtown backpackers: check with: www.backpackingchina.com
they are very helpful. take care

The Great Wall

Posted: 2009-03-19 04:54 AM
Hi Krys.
You have chosen a great place to go. When I was in Beijing I took a trip to Jinshangling. From there I took a walk a few kilomteres to Simatai. There you will find such great views (like a dragon) of the wall. This part of the wall in my opinion is the best to see. Not so crowded, some of the parts of the wall are renovated and gives great imagination how the wall was looking. Other parts of the wall were quite destroyed.
The best way to reach this part was to take a trip from most of the hostel (cheapest way and most convinient). They are taking you to Jinshanling there you are going alone through the wall to Simatai, where the mini van is waiting. You have as much time as you want.
Another part of the Great wall are: Badaling - renovated but most crowded and Mutyanu (if I am correct) - but I haven't been there so it is hard to say something for me.
I hope it will help little bit
for more info you can also see in my travellog from may 2008.
and thanks for your co

Hawaii

Krys,

Before I left, I thought that there was nothing to do in Hawaii but sit on a beach; I am so pleased I was wrong. There really is a lot more to engage in. I too learnt a lot from my visit.

Hey Krys,

It is a great milestone, if Rudi was around regularly he would have definitely caught it, he is good like that.

I look forward to seeing your contribution that will facilitate your next million.

All the best

Krys, on both recent milestones. You are waiting for the next million? That's a kind of promise I am glad about... :)
Thanks for your great contribution - Petra
