Chiang Mai is a quiet city at the north of Thailand. Not so busy, not so overcrowded and not so poluted. If you want to go in a jungle trecking for some days that´s the right city to start preparing your trecking. Nightlife, culture, tradition and jungle is what it can offer to the visitor.

Favourite spots: |
As a city i not so espectacular. Maybe the must is go to visit the city walls and the four gates as the Tapae gate. Also the temples inside the old quarter as the Watb Pra Sing or the Wat Chiang Man, the temple with the crystal Budha statue. There are also some other temples but minor ones and plan your treckings asking at your guesthouse, hotel or travel agencies all around Chiang Mai.

What's really great: |
The Jungle. I did a 3 days trecking in the Thailand jungle but further than the turistic buses or 4X4 can go. To do this just ask to the local people or at some little guesthouses to prepare an special trecking deeper inside the jungle. Stay with the jungle etnic groups and walk all along the jungle, ride the elephants and do the bamboo rafting on the river, wow!, was fun and great.

|
Sights: |
The temples, the city walls, the old quarter, the night market... there are nothing more special to see.
The night market is great to see, it isn´t Patpong street because there are not prostitution in the street, is just a great and big market where the minorities or etnic groups come from the jungle to sell their own art and handicrafts but you can find everything you want.

Accommodations: |
The north of Thailand is really much more cheaper than Bangkok and the south islands.
I found a great option at the NAT guesthouse.
Clean, good, hot water, good rooms and so familiar run.
The 3 girls were extremely funny and warm with me, they can help you with everything and show you the best nightlife.
The room was 150,-Bahts (Pra Plokao Road,6)
Other good options that i saw there were:
The Rose Guesthouse. Rajamanka Road, 87
Between 120 and 160,-Bahts
Is at the corner, have a good restaurant and the cheapest internet conection is behind them and is at 15,-Bahts/Hour
The Banana Guesthouse is really cheap, 80 to 120,-Bahts, but is not so good and usually only accept Japanesse people.
|
|
Nightlife: |
The clubs, pubs, etc ... usually are at the river side at the old quarter side.
Is plenty of bars and pubs and a great nightlife with some different kinds of music. Take care with the prostitution also in some of this locals.
I recommend you the Reagge bar, was fun and have the cheapest beer and Mekong Whisky and is great to see Reagge-Thai people!!
|
|
Restaurants: |
If you want to eat cheap and good just take a walk around the old quarter and look for some little and usually family-run restaurants.
At the Rajamanka Road, specially near the end at the river, there are some good restaurants. (Included two pizzerias)
At Rajadamnern Road there are also some good ones but more expensive, specially at the same street but at the other side of the river going to the night market.
|
|
Other recommendations: |
The jungle is great and a must to visit.
Not so expensive and great because of the experience, especially if you do the elephent ride and the bamboo rafting.
The jungle is great and usually you can do it with some other people of all over the world what makes it much more interesting.

Hello Danni,
thanx for your great report on Chiang Mai. Unfortunatelly I did not have the time to see it by myself on my last trip to Thailand, but will be back for sure!! If so, I have definatelly to follow your recommendation on Rajamanka Road, since I am addicted to Thai food!!
Happy travelling,
Andy |
