Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu is the capital of Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia.
Only a small city, it was one I enjoyed my time in. There was plenty to do, and not a lot of tourist's, I hope it stays this way!

Gaya Street Markets
Gaya Street Markets
Kota Kinabalu is affectionately known as KK.

I really had quite a spending spree here, as Shoes were incredibly cheap compared to home. I also loved the markets, and the Gaya Street markets on a Saturday are not to be missed. The Filipino markets are in a big shed stocked full of different crafts. The aisles are narrow, and on a hot day inside this building, it was stifling!

Favourite spots:
Mamutik Island
Mamutik Island
My favorite spot was the tropical islands just located off the coast from KK.
We went to Jessleton Harbour, this is where all the boats depart from. There were quite a few companies to choose from, and they all want your business. We chose, and then hired snorkelling gear, and decided on seeing two islands for the day, you could choose more or less as you wished.
The boat trip was only 15mins to the small island of Mamutik. A quick walk around, then into the water amongst the coral and the tropical fish. I also had some bread which the fish loved, they swarmed around me and were quite a spectacle!
At the allotted time, the Boat came and took us to Manukan Island where we enjoyed lunch under the trees on the beach. I loved the Chalet's here, and I must remember them for a return visit, I would love to stay in one! There were more fish here, bigger, and I thought not as many as on Mamutik. We had a great day!

What's really great:
Head Hunter
Head Hunter
The Monsopiad [Headhunters] village was interesting. It is located about 10kms from KK. The price included a guide who took us around the village, explaining about their lives. We went into the House of Skulls where 42 enemy skulls were hanging on display. I was very surprised that headhunting here only finished very recently. Scary!!!

I also was happy in seeing at Tambunan, the RAFFLESIA FLOWER which is the largest in the world and also the RAREST flower in the world.

The Rafflesia flower is a parasitic plant that grows on the lower slopes of mountain ranges, and is only found in certain areas of Southeast Asia. It has no roots, stem or leaves and starts life as a small, dark brown bud attached to its host, the stem or root of a jungle vine.
After taking approx 9 months to mature into a cabbage-sized bud, the plant opens.

Sights:
At the Museum
At the Museum
KK Museum & Heritage village was well worth a visit, with plenty to see indoors and outside.
The Museum Gift shop is quite good as well.

The Museum consists of the Main Building, Science and Education Centre, and the outdoors Heritage Village.
Inside are various Galleries housing Natural History, Ceramics, Ethnography and Archaeology exhibits.
You will see........ Ceramics, Traditional weapons and Costumes, Musical instruments, Tools and Ritual items, a cluster of human skulls from Sabah’s headhunting past, Totemic figures, old photographs, and ancient Pottery.

There is also an outdoors Heritage Village in the museum grounds where we entered and experienced different types of traditional houses of the various indigenous groups of Sabah, as well as their cooking utensils, etc.
Cultural activities are held here from time to time.
It is very well done, and is interesting.
ALLOW A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME TO VISIT ALL OF THE MUSEUM AREAS.

Accommodations:
Breakfast at the Beverly Hotel, KK
Breakfast at the Beverly Hotel, KK
The Beverly Hotel in KK was an excellent choice.
I booked it over the internet and we were not disappointed. After booking in, we went to our room, a high one as I requested, and not only that, it had a balcony included. Wow, this was nice, especially after a day of sightseeing!
Nothing was too much trouble for the staff here, anything we needed was quickly attended to.
Breakfast, a buffet, was included in the price and was great, good choices and freshly cooked omelette's!
Not only that, but when we had an early start for our flight, they packed us a huge breakfast to take with us, we really appreciated this, and only wished we could have eaten it all, it was huge!
Address.....Lorong Kemajuan, , Kota Kinabalu, Sabah
