Victorian High Country ( Not just Sale )

  4 votes

The Victorian High Country and Gippsland are little known as Tourist Destinations. To really appreciate this area you need to take your time. Although many good roads exist, there are also many dirt tracks and some of them Logging Tracks that need to be traveled on with respect. Of course a high clearance 4WD is the ideal vehicle, especially as when exploring you will often need to cross rivers and the best places can be found by following little traveled and at times overgrown tracks. The views from the mountain tops are spectacular and the fishing in the many streams is just great. In the early days there has been much mining activity in this area and many people still fossick today, mainly for Gold. The Movie The Man from Snowy River was filmed in those mountains. There are huge Mountain Ash, the tallest trees in Australia and tree ferns line streams and gully's.

Favourite spots:
Walhalla, a historic Gold Mining Town. Mt. Buller, a Skiing Village with aweinspiring views from the summit. Mc Allister River, always good for finding a few colours when fossicking.

What's really great:
It can be cold in the winter with snow and ice but absolutely beautiful during the summer months. Even when its very hot you often get a cool breeze and it does cool down enough at night for a good sleep. The many streams, many large enough for swiming and always good for a feed of Rainbow or Brown Trout. The remotenes from the overrun tourist trail.

Sights:
Latrobe Valley Browncoal Open Cuts,
Walhalla, historic Goldmining Town,
Dargo Highplains,
Mt. Buller, Mt. Baw Baw, Tarra Valley Nat. Park ( Rainforest ), Gippsland Lakes and Ninety Mile Beach.

Accommodations:

Hangouts:

I just read about Gippsland and the Great Alpine road, would you have any suggestion for my trip in Jan 2005?
