Hi active GLOBO members

There is quite a bit of commotion about rating photos and what photos are suitable. That is why we would like your opinion so that we can present a plan to Andy.

We would like to see:

1. Moderators to the photo galleries

2. Pop ups, with rating guidelines

3. Tag box whether the photographer wants a comment to his/her picture

On the homepage:

Link to:

4. What kind of photos to upload

5. Uploading guidelines

We would like to have your answers to the following question:

Question 1:

Your opinion about the above 5 points or/and any other suggestions.

Question 2:

What photos are suitable and what photos are unsuitable?

Eventually guidelines to what kind of photos to upload will be written. The draft will be posted on this forum for feedback.

Martin and Marianne

P.S.

This post has been created by Marianne and Martin, as a result of some personal messages that we exchanged and wanted to expand the number of members included in the discussion.<p>

Hi serious GLOBOmembers,

I will be thinking more about this and post again here later in the week but here are my initial thoughts:

1) OK, willing also to help

2) Pop-up no, button yes

3) Tagbox? What is that? It would be ridiculous to start rating and commenting on the comments and ratings themselves!

4)& 5) yes, but not on the homepage (start page) but on the page that appears just after clicking "Upload">>"Pictures">> there where one enters the place name. There is space there for buttons leading to F.A.Q and tips and guidelines and what is NOT wished in the gallery but a note that pictures can also be uploaded in reports, travel tips (often the case with people snaps) and travel log.

To Q1: the 5 point system works very well just;

a) it must be used/promoted much more to get better averages and

b) it must be used honestly - there will always be some 5% misuse whatever the system is.

To Q2: Accepted at GLOBO are ALL travel related photography owned or taken by the member him/her self of good quality. Private and personal pictures of family, friend, pets and homes should NOT be uploaded to the main gallery but incorporated in the members travel log (=travelogue ="blog") or a report or travel tip or even better in the members private website given in the profile.

Q3) How important are Titles? The titles and photographers own comment (sub-title) ARE important and should be included as part of the picture when rating. Words like "my/mine" should be discouraged, rather then "our" or even better "a/the"!

Hi Rudi

Explanation for point 3: "Tag box"

A box (square blank area) where you could put a tag, mark by clicking on it with the mouse.

(like the one next to where you write entrys to the forum which says: Send e-mail on reply)

There would be a box that you could tag (click with the mouse), the text with it could be: "I like to have feedback on my picture"

This box could appar somewhere in the uploading process, preferably with the text submission, like that it could be tagged on or of afterwards along with a text edit.

Q1 was about the 5 points mentioned in our post, and not the 5 point rating system ;-)

Hope this helps

hiya Martin and Marianne

My views and answers to your questions:-

1. Moderators to the photo galleries

Thats a good idea. At least the moderators will be able to help in looking out as to what photos are suitable to be posted.

2. Pop ups, with rating guidelines

Perhaps under a different section (ie. uploading section) rather than a pop up for every pic that is uploaded.

3. Tag box whether the photographer wants a comment to his/her picture.

Thats a good idea. Because there are sometimes when i am contemplating on posting a picture, ie motiffs on the taj walls, my intention is to show the design, and not to get a rating for the picture.

4. What kind of photos to upload

Frankly, this is a travel site, hence strictly travel pics are to be uploaded.

5. Uploading guidelines

Yes.. that would help all new globbies.

Another suggestion,

Brief guide as to stating the title of the photo and a comment to go along with it.

Perhaps Martin can work out a separate guide on how one should take a travel related photo, ie techniques to a great pic.

Hope that helps,

Gloria

Gloria,

thanks for your feedback. We also will have to decide what exactly are travel related photos, because opinions differ abou this.

Yes.. a guide on whats travel related photo has to be done. Personally i feel that as this is a travel website, it should be related to travel. And if a member wishes to put up personal pics of themselves in a travel shot, best leave it to the profile pic and occasionally change it. Alternatively to include it in their slideshow presentation.

I don't accept that travel relatedness lends itself to an acceptable/not acceptable pattern. I think there are degrees of it and they are not always clear in the photo.

For example, suppose I were to upload some photos of a holiday in Zimbabwe and included a picure of rhinos seen in poor early morning light. It would be poorer as a photo but more travel related than a photo of the same animals in Chester Zoo - wouldn't it? I did really wonder how to rate a number of nature photos which might show what to expect in the area they are taken or might be from a zoo, bird park or garden.

Then there isn't a nice clear line between posing and just present - though the principle is obvious.

Yes, I think there should be guidelines - but that they shoudn't be too restrictive.

David,

Thanks for the feedback. Could you suggest a few guidelines. By the way it would be great if everyone did, so that in the end we can write proper guidelines. But as you say the division between travel related and non-travel related will always be thin.

Hi there,

aren't Germans well known for creating rules for everything and for being very accurate? Well, I am german, but from my point of view these rules are going too far. My motto: As easy as possible. As long as the pictures are not infamous or discriminatory, I have no problems with them. Maybe I'm a little bit strange, but I think guidelines etc. could interfere in this case; they could be overdone.

Remember what we are doing here: This is just a travel community! Yes, it's the best one I know. Yes, I really like the communicative and friendly contact we have. Yes, like most things in life, it's important to improve the current status. But please, if I like a picture I rate high, if I don't like it or think it's not travel related I .... ! I do not want to use a check-list for rating pictures/reports. Just: As easy as possible...

I agree with you that it should be helpful, mainly for 'new Globies', to point out that this is a travel community and therefore only travel related pictures are welcome. And if we all keep an eye on the content, especially the pictures, there shouldn't be a need for a 'picture-moderator'.

Ok, that's what I wanted to contriubte to this subject; now I continue enjoying the comming spring - unbelievable, but true: We got a whiff of spring for 8 hours now in the middle of Germany...

Warm regards, Christian

Hi There

Travel related pictures... reading through the statements and having all those discussions lately in mind I suddenly had this idea:

A picture which tries to show the special features of the place

A picture which tries to capture the feel of the place

A picture which provokes itchy feet to the viewer

A picture which brings back memories for those who have been there

A picture which tells stories about the place

A picture which shows the real every day life to encounter there

A picture which captures all the beauty of the place

A picture which shows frankly how it is like to be there

People in those pictures really have to be every day people, because if the viewer really follows his itchy feet to the place and doesn't find the scene as he saw in on the picture he will be dissapointed. It's our responsibility to be honest with our audience and not show them stuff they would never be able to find for themselfes.

I think it's most important to show people stuff they are certain to find when going to the places. Because we are showing them all the beauties and all the emotions to be found there, they are sure following in our paths!

Just some thoughts :-)

Martin
