This is what I think:

1. Maybe the moderators is a good idea, but I don't know who would go through all those pictures.

2. Rating guidelines are a good idea. They need picture posting guidelines when they want to upload a picture instead of on the homepage so people won't forget. That way it would be harder to get a bad picture and you wouldn't need moderators.

3. The option to check whether people wat comments on their pictures is a good idea. I wouldn't check that box because I'd rather get feedback on the pictures I take so I can maybe change something I'm doing right now.

Any picture that is travel-related. I think native peoples are fine and shows a bigger sense of the place.

Hi Globies,

I am totally agree, especially with the points of Martin,

Question 1

1)Moderators should be allowed to delete a photo if the subject is not travel related, or the quality is really poor. The member should be warm, so that will give him the opportunity to delete the photo himself. (what do you think?)

2) Pop up: I would rather like a button

3)Tag box, members can already describe the picture, further comments can be addes only to answer a question rose by another member, but should not be used to add silly remarks or comentary as previously seen. The name of Tag box is not right, we should fine another name to it "additional comments" for an example or something else.

4) Yes Agree on that point that will be useful

5) Most members knows how to upload photos, it can be useful, but not essential.

Question 2

I agree with the previous comments already made.

A PHOTO SHOULD SHOW A LANDMARK OF A COUNTRY, A TOURISTIC SITE, OR A AREA OF NATURAL BEAUTY. It should bring back memories, or make people want to go there. The photo should represent the feel , the atmosphere of a special place.

Also I will add

-It can be nice to see photos representing the local pouplation at work, for example a member uploaded a shoe maker in Pakistan working on the side of the street. You learn a lot that way as well. In these case no posing for the camera, it should look natural, and obvioulsy the consent of the person!

-No person straight in front of the photo foreground, only acceptable in the background to give an human scale to a building or monument.

- And again no personal pics! Ie do not want to see the Globo member or family straight in the foreground! Ie a party in Bankok.

-I think it is Ok for people wearing the National costume, or dress to pose for a photo, as the national costume is part of their way of life and culture, and definetly part of the travel experience.

-5* should be excellent quality or/and prove of good originality.

Will be nice if we have a scale of 10* or 1/2 stars, as someting you think that a 3* is bit harsh, but 4* is generous.

Well, I have nothin more to say at that stage,

Take care

Isabelle

Marianne, briefly my answer to your question about the below mentionned 3 points:

1. Moderators to the photo galleries: Yes, I agree that they are needed

2. Pop ups, with rating guidelines: no pop ups, but a description mentionned together with the stars. I mean, when you want to rate a pic, the following explanation:

* poor

** regular

***good

****very good

*****perfect!

3. Tag box whether the photographer wants a comment to his/her picture: no need. I think that nobody is against fair comments.

Wunderkind, Isabelle and Isaac thanks for your input and suggestions. Martin and I will pass on all suggestions to Andy.

Regarding the three points in consideration, I have been invited to express my opinion:

1- Moderators are always needed to keep control and avoid degeneration.

2- Pops up looks commercial, like a casino, or wanting to sell stuff. I am against pops up.

3- Tag box. I think that it goes without saying. Cooment pictures is a great improvement, very recent and as I can see, very successful in Globo.

Thank you very much for inviting me to participate in this interesting forum.

Wow.... so much to read here.

I am slightly concerned as to giving grades to photos period. If you want to be technical post on a photography website. Travel is many things to many people and to grade a photo that someone has posted can not reflect what the felt when they took the shot. I , like all my surfer bretheren travel to surf, when I take a photo or see a photo of a wave it means so much more to me and other surfers , that a non surfer would not understand. To me it should be really simple...if you like a photo or you can relate to a photo someone has posted tell them why you like their photo, there really is no need to put a number to them.

I also think a sense of humour is esential when travelling and I would emplore more people to try catching this side of their travells as well as the art and the culture of a place. Surley the reason we all travel is because the way it makes us feel and if that can be encaptulated in a picture, staged or otherwise we should be able to post that too.

K.I.S.!!! (Keep It Simple) if you wanna get technical go to photography website. This is a travel website........so lets see the reasons EVERYBODY travels and not just the views and opinions of a few select people.

Peace

xxx

P.S. On Yer Mart and Marianne good discussion.

Well, I have to admit I agree with Isaac's comments regarding deleting poorly ranked photos.

I told Vicky ( member VBX - who wrote all those great China travel reports last fall) not to take to heart that some of her favourite photos were given 2/3 stars. A photo that means something special to me might mean nothing to someone else and they simply rank it based on technical aspects or whether they like the subject. Some of my favourite photos are ranked only 2 or 3 stars.

I know I would be upset if someone here decided to purge some of my favourite photos to make way for yet another sunset photo. I love sunsets/sunrises but let's be honest, there are hundreds, if not thousands of these already on our website and we seem to get more every week. I know I've taken a couple myself, so I'm guilty of it too.

As for the questions posed originally;

1. I weould support having moderators for the photo galleries, but that would be a very arduous task. My guess would be that several hundred photos are uploaded every week. Does anyone want to volunteer to take on this monumental task? I'll be honest, I wouldn't have the time...

2. I don't care for Pop ups at all. If you wanted to add rating guidelines, why not direct new members to a special "guidlelines" or "Standards" section that every member needs to read.

3. I like the idea of a photographer deciding ahead of time whether or not he/she wants input on their photo. I can't see a reason why this shouldn't be implemented.

James, regarding the 3 points, I want to point out my thoughts about your last comment:

1- I am sure that some veteran members would be delighted to take care of this “job”. Let us just ask in this or in another forum for volunteers

2 - Well, I associate pops up with the many spams that I receive every day in my computer. Personally I do not like them.

3 - In the reports the author is not asked whether he likes or not to receive comments on his work. Therefore, the same would be for the pictures. When you register as a Globo member you should know that you are offering something for other members to share and enjoy. I am sure that many would be disappointed if they could not comment nice pictures of some members because these have so decided.

I agree with everyone that there is a need for some form of moderator to oversee photos. I want to follow up on Martin's point about Slide Shows. Martin put together a Slide Show featuring a typical Bus Trip, using photos he realized might not be the best from a techinical standpoint. I put together a Slide Show on the Inka Trail in much the same way. I used this photo: http://www.globosapiens.net/eirekay/picture-inka-trail-typical-dinner-time-gathering-24801.html to illustrate a typical meal on the trail. I uploaded another of me in a rock tunnel because the photo without anyone in the tunnel gave no idea of it's size I have one of a camp ground too. None of these are great photos but in the context of giving someone an accurate idea of what the Inka Trail is like, they appropriate. They are ** and under some of these proposals would be deleted. What does that do to the slide show?

Hi Eire

I don't like the idea of automatic deletion caused on votes.

This would delete some great shots for slideshows as you rightfully posted.

So if I uploaded a picture for a slide show and I knew they would not be perfect to stand alone in the gallery, I could tick no comment wished. If we had this feauture installed.

@ all

Just today I found two new pictures which would sure be some work for the moderators:

http://www.globosapiens.net/aladdino/pictures-nile-river-near-luxor-32340.html

Picture deleted by Andy :-)

clearly scanned out of a book. which would surely be a copyright issue!

I don't know why it has 4 votes averaging 4 stars and nobody realises that it is scanned out of a book. Sure if it would have been his picture it would qualify for the four stars but the bad scan quality and would deduce one. But the fact that it seams to be a copyright issue it should be rated with one star.

http://www.globosapiens.net/trondpg/picture-on-the-way-to-kilimanjaro-32337.html?rating=1

There really is no interesting background and clearly posing, perhaps might be for a slide show. Are you provoking a discussion, Trond?

Have a great day

Martin
