During January 2005, we decided a short trip to Brugge (Bruges) in Belgium and we hit the road from Holland. We suspected the weather to play a negative role but as luck would have it, the weather turned out to be very friendly.
Icon of Bruges
City of Bruges (aka Brugge) boasts to be the venice of north Europe with its water ways and exquisite architecture across the town. With its cathedrals, museums, some exquisite lace work, horsecart rides, a visit to Bruges can stay definitely memorable. To enjoy the beauty of the place, best is to take a walk across this city or to take a bike to avoid swamping the narrow streets with cars.
Favourite spots:
A view from the Belfry tower
The city centre is an amazing place. It is so full of life and the people of Bruges take pride in also maintaining it as such. You can take a horsecart ride across the city that takes about 20 minutes. It is the local heritage that makes this also special that the horsecart ride across the narrow streets of the town is warmly greeted by the locals. Belfry tower standing tall in the city centre offers an excellent panoramic view of the city. St. Basil's Chapel: A Chapel in gothic style from 15th century, contains the famous Relic of the Holy Blood
What's really great:
Belfry Tower
Bruges also boasts of very fine and delicate work of lace. You can find a lot of shops with souvenirs exclusively made using the local craftsman ship using laces. Chocolate line is a shop close to the city centre, one of the few shops that specialize in making some fine confectionaries. You should not be returning without trying some delicacies there. We found a very good indian restaurant by name Bhavani. It is one of the finest dining places in the city with the staff offering some excellent Indian cuisine blended with a lot of care and courtesy. For beer lovers, Bruges could be heaven on earth. As such Belgium is famous for some hundreds of varieties of beer. There are several family owned breweries that make special beer exclusively sold in their own pubs (not commercially available). It is definitely worth tasting those exclusive ones.
Accommodations:
Hotel Flanders, close to the city centre is a good place to stay. They have a parking place (on chargeable basis) as well.
Hangouts:
There are a lot of pubs that offer very good choice of beers. Beer with some pieces of cheese and mustard gravy, leaves a lingering taste in the mouth.
