Queen of hill stations

Pleasant weather all through the year, lush forests, valleys, lakes, straw berrys and honey together make Mahabelwshwar's description easy to start with. But unless you are explicitly told about, you would not find it in your default itinerary.

Faintest ink is stronger than the greatest memory, well there is a also saying that the word of mouth is much influencial than the written referrals. Mahabaleshwar, also known as Queen of hill startions in the state of Maharastra (India), belongs to the category of those places that deserve more visibiity in the world of leisure travel. Mahabaleshwar, a nature's gift to eco-tourism, situated at a height of about 1300 meters above the sea level. It is indeed a special place due to the fact that the altitude and its proximity to the arabian sea, create an ideal setting for pleasant weather all through the year. Most of the visitors into Mahabaleshwar are from the neighbouring places to stay over for a couple of days, mostly in the weekends. Although, you could make a trip all through the year, the best season is between October and May. Mahabaleshwar used to be a summer retreat for the British when they were ruling India. Also, it used to serve as a retention camp for Chinese and Malay convicts. Mahabaleshwar today boasts of some very fine variety of Straw berries available in India and it is due to the fact that these convicts started to grow straw berries both because of their inherent skills and the accomodative temparatures.

All the sight seeing points across Mahabaleshwar offer breath taking views on the valleys. I would suggest to spend simply two days just going around various viewing points to appreciate the offer from nature. You could also do that in a day by rushing in your car, but then you can only count the number of places but not remember what they actully are. Arthur's seat: I would sit any amount of time in this place relaxing at the sight of excellent scenery from hills and valleys

What's really great:
Market Place, where you can buy the the specialities from Mahabaleshwar

Mahabaleshwar is quite an un-assuming place, I would say. It has a very historical and religious side of the picture and at the same time the opportunity to attract tourists that love eco-tourism. I see a delicate balance of them both co-existing, without competing with each other. Old temples and places of religious importance are protected from the tests of time. Cultivation of straw berries, potatoes and flowers continue as main stream of argicultural backbone. You would not find any extravagant step of over commercializing the place.

Sights:

Old Mahabaleshwar, where the famous temple Panchganga is located. It is of great important to the river Krishna where the river originates from here.

We visited Mahabaleshwar for 4 days during the new year season, though unplanned but left us with some excellent memories of the place.

We stayed in this place called, Brighland holiday village, almost at the entrance of Mahabaleshwar. A very decent place and probably in the best league of hotels/resorts in Mahabaleshwar. Located close to Kate's point, it has very good rooms, many dining choices, a swimming pool and a health club too.

The other comparable choice will be valley view resorts.

Other recommendations:
Panchagani (5 planes) is another excellent place that you would be able to visit when you are in Mahabaleshwar. Just about 10-15 km from Mahabaleshwar.
