Franklin, North Carolina has the reputation as being the Gem City of the USA. This is because of all of the natural rubies and sapphires that can be found in the area. My wife and I had the habit of traveling to Franklin at least once per month when we lived in Georgia. Now, it is a yearly visit. We find that going into the mountains to the 'Gem Mines' is relaxing, and somewhat rewarding. Our favorite location is Gold City Gem Mines.
Favourite spots:
Gold City Gem Mines - visit for local souvenirs and 'mine' for some stones Nantahala Gorge - about 30 miles west of Franklin Chattooga River - about 25 miles south of Franklin. Try out the white water rafting.
What's really great:
We went to Franklin especially for the gemstonbe mining. We usually spent a lot of money having some stones cut and set for my wife.

Ponderosa Steak House - this chain serving steaks is inexpensive and easy to be served
