Rock Tombs

Dalyan is an easy miss if you don't keep your eye out. We rented a car to get to this obscure, but very worthwhile location. Located south of Mugla and just north of Fethiye, Dalyan has some of the most unique tombs you will find anywhere. There are several, maybe 20 in all, gigantic tombs of archiac style. They are carved right into the bed rock and stand about 40-50 feet high. They somewhat, although on a smaller scale, resemble the idea of Petra in Jordan. It is baffling how these were carved out of the hard rock because most of the tombs are unreachable from the ground. They are in the middle of a 300 foot cliff with no accessable route to get to them. There is also a ruined castle a short hike away which is a must to check out if you are in the area.

Favourite spots:
Taking a cruise through small canals while the sun sets is beautiful. Looking back at the tombs creates an eery yellow glow that is a must see.

What's really great:
As throughout Turkey, what I liked best was the uniquenss of the area and the lack of tourists. This is off the beaten path so you are sure for inexpensive rooms and I didn't run into one person while looking at the tombs. I didn't go in peak summer, yet still I cannot believe it would ever be slammed with tourists here

Accommodations:
There are a number of hostels and some hotels, however, where ever you stay, it is a good price and very clean.

Restaurants:
A fair amount of variety and the owners of the restaruant will actually bargain with you in order to get you to eat at their place
