A lovely little town thats the perfect place to escape to when the madness of bangkok gets too much. Famed by the history, the book and the film kanchanaburi is not the cheesy tourist destination you'd think it would be. There's nightlife a plenty if you want it or lots of quiet spots for total relaxation. The museums are all worth a visit and you can even take the train over some of the old tracks built in WWII. There's even a bridge over the river kwai with mock torpedos to take your photo with, the ultimate cheesy holiday snap!

Favourite spots: |
Erawan national park. Just a short drive from the town is a fantastic spot for romantic walks and country picnics. There are seven levels of waterfalls, walk to the top and then chill out and go swimming on the way down. The trees are filled with monkeys, the pools filled with fish and if you take that special someone then im sure they'll be yours forever... or just for the night, depending on what you're looking for!

What's really great: |
The apple guest house. It has the most amazing restaurent with some of the best food i've eaten in thailand! The rooms are little bamboo style bungalows, there is a massage place down the road and the hotel has an honest travel guide service that can help you out if you're stuck for an agenda. Whatever you do, make sure you have a thai curry here, i think i ate 5 in 3 days!

Sights: |
All the museums. I spent a lovely day getting lost in the town and came across the jeath war museum. Not great by official museum standards but a lovely personal tribute and the staff are very helpful with anything you want to know!

Kanchanaburi is one of my favorite places in Thailand. I always find there are new things to see and do in the River Kwai area. |
