York is a fantastic town halfway between London and Edinburgh. It's the 2nd most haunted city in the UK and most visited outside of London. The town is littered with history. The original roman walls still stand, clifford's castle stands on the site of the 1st building ever there. It has been the scene of many overseas arrivals.. romans, vikings, normans etc.. Museums are mainly free in the UK and this has too many to fit in 1 day! Castle museum alone will take more than a day if you want to look at everything there! There is so much to do that you should consider spending lots of your time here. Horse and carraige rides, opentop bus tours, river tours, ghost walks... really, i could go on all day.

Favourite spots: |
The riverbank. You can get a on a boat for a tour or hire your own and go explore. The riverside is the perfect place for picnics and chilling out, just a little walk from the city centre and you'll have a shaded patch all to yourself, the perfect way to spend a summers day!

What's really great: |
The city centre. A lot of the buildings are the originals and are perserved brilliantly. There are great shops for the spend thirsty amoungst us and street entertainers around every corner, From world music to fire juggling. The Ghost walks give you a tour of the city by night with a few suprizes along the way. Travel couldn't be easier and the people are fantastically friendly!
Nightlife: |
There are only 3 nightclub licenses allowed in the city centre to preserve the peace but all tastes can be accomodated. Try the arts centre on the micklegate bridge, alternative music and lifestyles by the thousand!
Hangouts: |
York has a pubwatch system whereby if you cause trouble in 1 pub, you will find it difficult to get into any others! This keeps trouble and violence to a minimum, something not often found in English city centres.
Restaurants: |
All tastes from all over the world can be catered for. There's probably enough restaurants in York to keep you busy for most of the year!
Other recommendations: |
The xmas market. Held in the city centre surrounded by lights and magic, world Aids day on december 1st sees candle light viduals that is enough to move anyone into hugging perfect strangers.

Didn't find it helpful for what to see while in York, but was useful for "how to function" in York. |

I visited York this spring, and enjoyed it as well... there's so much great stuff, not to mention Yorkminster, the Shambles, walking the city wall and browsing the cute shops! |
